Nobody teaches you how to lead a room during a resuscitation.
You don't become calm because you aren't scared. You become calm because everyone else needs you to be.

One of the biggest things I've changed my mind about: Confidence doesn't make you a better physician.
Curiosity does.
The best doctors I know are confident enough to act and humble enough to question themselves.

To the new residents: Nobody expects perfection in July. We’re looking for honesty, effort, and growth.

One of the most important skills in July: knowing when to ask for help early.
That’s not weakness.
That’s good medicine.

To the new interns, you are not supposed to know everything in July.
Your job right now is:
show up
care deeply
ask questions
stay curious
and learn safely

The ED is chaos.
Teaching in that chaos means building order, not through control, but through trust.

If we send you home, it’s not because we don’t care.
It’s because we ruled out the dangerous things.
That’s a win—even if it doesn’t feel like one.

The Hero vs the Warrior…….
There is a difference between a hero and a warrior.
The hero wants to win. They want success. They want the outcome. They want the glory.
When the hero is winning they are looking at the score and clock, wanting it to move faster so the game can end and they can win.
The warrior isn’t concerned with the score, the outcome or the time on the clock.
The warrior doesn’t seek or want glory.
The warrior loves the battle.
The warrior is focused on the NOW and they fight to the end!
As I wrote this, I thought about many times in my past when I was a hero and other times when I was a warrior.
Back then I didn’t know I could choose.
Now I know that I can. And so can you.
You can choose to be a hero or a warrior.
You can focus on the numbers, constantly look at the scoreboard, seek recognition, want the glory and hope for the win.
Or you can be totally engaged in the present moment with the people in front of you, love the battle and give your all until the end.
When I spoke to the Arizona Diamondbacks during spring training and talked about the difference between a hero and a warrior they gave me a shirt that had NOW on the front of the shirt and WON on the back.
NOW and WON are reversals of each other.
When you become a Warrior and focus on the NOW you will have WON!
Which will you choose to be? Hero or Warrior?

Real positivity isn’t soft. It’s strong. It’s resilience and mental toughness. It’s overcoming negativity and adversity. It’s seeing all the crap in the world and choosing a positive attitude and a path forward.

It’s because your skill can change a life.
