“We just saw one of the greatest games in Mets history.” Mets history may be short on postseason wins but long on postseason magic. The 2024 team is charting its course into franchise lore. nytimes.com/athletic/5817555…

Can’t believe Belichick got passed over again.
The Cincinnati Reds are hiring Terry Francona as their next manager, sources tell The Athletic. Francona, 65, returns to managing after retiring from the Guardians at the end of the 2023 season. More from @ctrent and @ZackMeisel. 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/5817322…

Alex Rodriguez asked a question. Reggie Jackson answered it. (Shouts to the producer and rest of the desk for staying out of Reggie’s way and just letting him talk. I doubt they expected this answer. But it’s a great few minutes of television.)

You don’t often see a team having to say specifically that *all* members of the team being honored are invited to the ceremony. You’d usually just assume that. Usually.
The Red Sox announce they'll be commemorating the 20th anniversary of the 2004 team in addition to a ceremony for Tim and Stacey Wakefield during their home opener on April 9. All 2004 team members have been invited. A list of attendees will be announced closer to the date.

On Hall of Fame announcement day each year, at least a few of you ask if you can PayPal or Venmo me a thank you donation. This year, if you have the means, I would love if you would help Chris, who has been through way too much lately.

Figuring out where to draw the line on starting pitchers when you've got Buehrle and Pettitte on the ballot now and then Sabathia and Hernandez hitting the ballot in 2025, Hamels in 2026, and Lester in 2027 is going to be some kind of exercise.
What's up with these meteoric rises of players like Helton? Why are guys with under 2,000 hits (Utley, Andruw) now looking so electable? How many HOFs arrive on next year's ballot? An honor to be part of this HOF roundtable with @pgammo & @Ken_Rosenthal theathletic.com/5208807/2024…

There are four no-brainers in the contemporary generation of starting pitchers: Greinke, Kershaw, Scherzer, and Verlander. By WAR, all four are among the top 35 SPs of all-time. Beyond those four, there's going to be no consensus on where to draw the HOF in/out line.

Of the players on the Hall of Fame ballot in 1974, 17 wound up being inducted via one path or another. Of the players on the ballot in 1999, 11 wound up being inducted. The idea that the 2024 ballot could have fewer than 8-10 legitimate HOFers on it is preposterous.

Long Story short, for the Red Sox, it was time to move Vaughn
Sounds like the Red Sox plan to use Vaughn Grissom as their primary 2B next season. Obviously things can change, but I think that's the best way to set your internal depth chart at the moment. Grissom at second, Story at short ... and Chris Sale in Atlanta.

So it’s a 60% off Sale
The deal: Chris Sale and $17 million to Atlanta for Vaughn Grissom, who has the full 6 years of team control remaining.
