The infrastructure built to treat Muslim identity as a security threat didn't disappear: it expanded. Today it's been repurposed against immigrant communities, with the same executive powers first justified by 9/11. @mobbiemobes breaks down 25 yrs of this:

The Islamophobia in the Michigan Senate race is officially at nuclear-grade levels.
1. Ted Cruz claiming Abdul El-Sayed might share classified intel with the Muslim Brotherhood and terrorists
2. Trump calling AES "Mohammed" and mocking his name
3. Mike Rogers trying to tie AES's biological mom, whom he stopped being raised by when he was 3, to Al-Qaeda
This stuff is more pernicious than most people acknowledge today. Republicans could win this race by challenging AES's ideas, but they apparently can't help themselves but fear monger about his faith.
Florida Rep. Randy Fine wrote: “We need more Islamophobia, not less. Fear of Islam is rational.”
Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles: Muslims “don’t belong in American society.”
Alabama Sen Tommy Tuberville saying “The enemy is inside the gates" about Zohran, next to pictures of the Twin Towers burning on 9/11.
It has a very particular, distinct post 9/11 vibe to it. Really, really unhinged and ugly shit, and not nearly enough people calling it out.
This week’s newsletter: I wrote about the GOPs strategy of Islamophobia has been aided by Democrats and the press. And I find the lack of pushback not only immoral but shortsighted.
We either all have a place in democracy or we don’t. And the forces seeking to marginalize their place in the American project will likely expand to others

"Through analysis of over thirty-one case studies of Muslim American candidates and elected officials between 2001-2026, four distinct manifestations of Islamophobia pervade electoral politics:
1) conspiracy theories of an Islamic invasion and imposition of Sharia law,
2) gendered Islamophobia,
3) political violence,
4) presumptions of antisemitism"

Muslim and Arab candidates often must prove more than their qualifications: that their faith, family, and foreign policy views pose no threat. Scrutinizing a record is legitimate. Treating Muslim identity as grounds for suspicion is not.

Dr. Esposito left us a discipline of better questions (whose Islam, which movement, under what conditions) rather than a verdict on Islam and the West. In an age of sweeping judgments, that habit of specificity may be his most lasting gift.
