I wish journos/academics would stop using the "warts and all" metaphor re US history. America's darkest chapters are not mere cosmetic flaws, inconvenient but ultimately manageable, but more like congenital birth defects, baked into the country's very DNA. Happy 4th, everyone!

For the life of me I can’t figure out why these people have jumped on critical race theory as the ultimate boogeyman. Few people knew about it and even fewer studied it. All I can come up with is that it *sounds* offensive to them.

Last night, while gazing at the sky near my tent in Shenandoah NP, I watched a string of starlike lights stream by & swore they were UFOs. "It's probably some Elon Musk shit," joked a friend. Just got service and read it was a parade of Starlink satellites. I hate the future.
