As a digression from science content, I thought I'd share a fun little data viz I made. TL;DR, I have gotten REALLY into road cycling the past couple of years; one thing I love about the sport is all the data it produces. Here's one view of my journey to 13,500 mi this year.🚴‍♂️😀

Some highlights: -It's fun how you can spot the two times I went on vacation. 😄 -In July I was training for a 166-mi ride around Mt. Rainier, and spending >20 hrs/week on the bike! 💀 -I spent a lot of time on the indoor trainer, which shows the value of tools like Zwift.

What can I say, I like to ride...a lot...especially for a great cause like this. 🚴‍♂️🧬🏆
#Obliteride is an inspiring event and we're so proud of Team Adaptive and all the participants who took part in the cause to raise funds for life-saving cancer research. A big shout-out to Adaptive’s @bryan_howie for biking 4K miles and Team Adaptive for logging over 9K miles!

Wow, lots of good memories of working on this paper, including the time Peter brought us grad students a 6-pack as we were hacking away at figures late into the night. I spent endless hours trying to cram as much information into Figure 5 as I could.
Fifteen years today since the publication of the WTCCC paper! One of my career highlights to work with so many amazing people at the dawn of a new era in human genetics. Nice too to think that that paper played its part in moving the field forward.

I got my start as a scientist when, as a junior at UW, I showed up to Debbie's lab and asked if I could do a project in "computational genomics." Debbie brought a brazen confidence to everything she did, and her delighted cackle was legendary. RIP DN.
My post doc advisor Debbie Nickerson of @uwgenome died on Christmas Eve. She changed the way we thought of and measured single nucleotide polymorphisms. Genomics has lost one of its greats. She was a fierce advocate for many trainees. I don’t know how to process this loss.

We are looking to hire a fully-funded postdoc to work on rockfish genomics, adaptation, and speciation in the context of extreme lifespan following up on our recent publication science.org/doi/10.1126/scie… See the ad below and sudmantlab.org/ #popgen #aging #teamfish #genetics
Great extension of tcrdist by @agartland and Koshlan Mayer-Blackwell for defining “meta-clonotypes” of similar TCRs from antigen-enriched repertoires. It will be an important tool for addressing the challenge of private specificity in repertoire profiling. elifesciences.org/articles/6…

I work for a company that makes a T-cell COVID test, but I also have important people in my life who are taking B-cell depleting therapies, and I would love to know how much immunity is provided when antibodies can't be made. This article gets it right. morningconsult.com/opinions/…

I love this book.
My new popular science book, A Pocket Guide to Pigeon Watching: Getting to Know the World's Most Misunderstood Bird, is officially out! It's full of fun facts, jokes, and wild tales. Booklist called it "the most perfect of popular science titles"(!) workman.com/products/a-pocke…
Functional genomics folks, we’re hiring a scientist @VariantBio in Seattle. If you’re interested in building multi-omics resources for historically underrepresented populations, consider joining our awesome and fast-growing team! boards.greenhouse.io/variant…

We just released CompAIRR – a tool that reduces greatly the longstanding computational bottleneck of identifying shared identical and similar sequences among large sets of immune repertoires. All the details/links are in the thread below. Feedback is very welcome! @airr_community
We are happy to report a dramatic speedup for one of the core computations for adaptive immune receptor repertoire (AIRR) analysis - the discovery and counting of receptors that overlap between repertoires! Check out our CompAIRR method: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/… 1/7
