Posting some of the amazing movies captured by first author @christianlizett that can be found in our recent preprint...

...and it was incredible to find that enteroendocrine cells (green in this movie) appear to quickly internalize phages, or debris from cell lysis (white). pink = nuclei of intestinal tissues.
First preprint from the Wiles Lab! We used an approach we call "Phollow" to study phage replication and transmission by live imaging!

So inspired by my recent trip to New Hampshire for the @GordonConf on Microbial Population Biology…was able to grab a bike and roll some gravel too!
Grad student Courtney Knitter captured this electric image of a Vibrio species (magenta) colonizing the zebrafish gut. Cyan marks cells of the zebrafish that are producing inflammatory signals.
🙌such fun images of 3 member E. coli communities in the zebrafish gut by postdoc Liz Ortiz! @christianlizett

Save the date for our SoCal Microbiome Symposium, Sept 19, 2022! We've got a great line up, including @bunsen_B @JoleahLamb @Suzanne_Devkota Juliet Morrison (UC Riverside), Kevin Honaker (BiomeSense), @ShikumaLab, Margaret McFall-Ngai, @JedFuhrman. Join us!
Incredibly grateful for the support of @NIAIDFunding and to be doing research at @UCIBioSci! Lots of challenges along the way but couldn’t have achieved this without my mentors Karen Guillemin and @MulveyLab.
#UCIBioSci assistant professor of molecular biology and biochemistry, Travis Wiles, has received the New Innovator Award to help combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

It also made a big difference to receive encouragement from others when things seemed discouraging—@rabritton @Symbionticism 🙌🏼—I hope to pay it forward.
#WorldPhageDay #WorldPhageWeek ?!
The Wiles Lab is game!
