As you know, last year I resigned from my full-time job and become a professional technical book writer. I have plans for The Hundred-Page Books about reinforcement learning, computer vision, diffusion models, and more.
Not having a full-time job has put a significant strain on my savings, so if you love my books and are waiting for more, I would appreciate your continuous support.
I have finalized the offer for those who financially support me. Here's what I offer:
- As a Cool Supporter 10 🚀 ($10/month), you will get early access to new book chapters, exclusive updates on what to really care about in AI and why (only the important stuff, no hype), and a free e-book copy of all new books.
- As a Cool Supporter 30 🚀 ($30/month), you will get everything a Cool Supporter 10 🚀 gets, plus a signed hard copy of all new books.
The names of all Cool Supporters 🚀 will be mentioned in the Acknowledgment section of the new books as important contributors. Your name, printed in the book, will remain in history forever!
If you decide to become a Cool Supporter 🚀, you can choose from several platforms. Here's the list: linktr.ee/burkov
If you choose Substack, you will also get a subscription to a weekly AI newsletter without ads.
Why do you think Elon still hasn't introduced a feature that lets you talk to any X user indirectly, via an AI bot trained on that user's history of posts?
This is elementary to implement, and you could talk to the best minds out there. What stops him?
Fear of lawsuits? Fear that people will talk to their dead relatives? What could it be?
Software engineers and CS students regularly reach out to me, offering to help build ChapterPal.
I wish I could say that I need help coding new features, but the truth is, I can add any feature I can think of in 15 to 30 minutes.
I don't even test anything most of the time. I ask the agent to test it if it's something visual, but rarely.
What I need is help bringing more people to ChapterPal.
I also need help converting and validating more books faster, much faster than I can do it alone.
But this isn't the kind of work people are excited about.
They say that those students and their dumb teachers aren't responsible for what the barbarians who came from the hole in the world do with the public property that the great ancestors of those students built with love, talent, ingenuity, sweat, and blood.
Yes, they ARE responsible. They knew exactly how it would end. When you are surrounded by gunpowder, you know exactly what will happen when you create a spark.
You are surrounded by gunpowder. You cannot change that. So creating a spark while standing in the middle of it is irresponsible, criminal, dumb.
Topological Obstructions to Stability and Stabilization by Wouter Jongeneel and Emmanuel Moulay (2023) is now in @ChapterPal's collection of open textbooks.
The textbooks is about controllers. A controller is a rule that turns measurements into actions: a thermostat uses temperature to switch heating, cruise control uses speed to adjust throttle, and a drone uses orientation to adjust motor thrust. As an engineer, you design or program that rule to make a system reach a target and remain stable.
This book explains when your requirements are mathematically impossible for the type of controller you chose, regardless of tuning.
For robots and systems involving rotations, geometry can prevent one continuous control rule from stabilizing every starting configuration.
Read it to understand when to stop tuning and change the design—for example, by switching between control rules.

Reading with ChapterPal is as close as you can get to having a conversation with an author—short of having the author read the book aloud to you and letting you interrupt with questions.
In the ChapterPal Reader, you press the down arrow key to reveal the next paragraph of the chapter's original text. This is when the author speaks to you.
Instead of revealing the next paragraph, you can use the chat input panel to ask a question. This is your way of interrupting the author. You can ask your question knowing that the author understands it in the context of what you've just read.
Once you receive an answer grounded in the chapter's context, you can let the author continue speaking by revealing the next paragraph, or you can continue the conversation with the "author" in a separate chat session, much like you would with a regular chatbot.
When everything is clear, you return to the exact point in the chapter where you last interrupted the author and let them resume speaking by revealing more of the original text.

Foundations of Quantum Theory: From Classical Concepts to Operator Algebras by Klaas Landsman (2017) is now in @ChapterPal's collection of open textbooks.
The textbook explores the mathematical and conceptual foundations connecting classical physics to operator algebras in quantum theory.
It's a dense text: 881 pages and 41 illustrations, so I recommend to use the AI tutor when blocked.
All books on ChapterPal are free to read with a free account. A paid account gives you more questions to ask the AI tutor, personalized reading recommendations based on your interests, auto-generated quizzes that allow you to validate your understanding, offline reading with a mobile app, and more.
