Often I'm confronted with the dissonance between what my friends, non-math-teacher-colleagues, and random-people think is math, and I what I know to be math. Calculating tip at lunch is arithmetic; asking "what is a living wage?" and tipping towards that is closer to math.

Calculating BMI is arithmetic; asking "who came up with this, and why are we basing a measure of health for all people on the bodies of white men?" Is math. Coming up with a better alternative to BMI is math. Identifying the variables that can measure aspects of health is math.

Considering that health might be made up of some factors that are difficult to measure with *numbers* is math. Mental health is a great lurking variable for the BMI problem, and I'd want every mathematician in my class to ask a question that would lead them to that conclusion.
#mtbos #iteachmath any useful threads or blog posts on the value and uses of learning logs or regular reflection/journaling?

#iteachmath #iteachphysics Can anyone direct me toward thoughts re: teaching seniors (e.g. AP Calc) and allowing students to retake assessments? Looking for the debate around using reassessment as a learning tool and also preparing students for the reality of college assessments.
