The best part about being at a film festival is being isolated from the news of the world. The world, in fact, is incredibly stupid.

I think seven movies in the theatre in a day might be my breaking point
Root Awakening (local doc)
Nuisance Bear
Rose
Nina Roza
La Gradiva
Peril at Pincer Point
Ken Russell’s Altered States
Blocking every account that does nothing but yell at people about how M*chael is the best movie of all time just to make award season far less of a headache. I advise you to do the same.
Death Has No Master played at Cannes and has a producer based here in London, ON. This hellish slow burn about colonialism may be a little too slow, but it looks absolutely fantastic and builds to a really great climax.

Sorry, but both La Bola Negra and All of a Sudden leaking online on the same day is disgusting shit. See these films on a big screen, I implore you. Give them your money. They deserve it.
The defeatist mindset is more getting in the way than money. No one wants to befriend someone who is a downer, trust me. It doesn’t work. It is easy to make friends as an adult you just have to get used to getting out and doing things

One thing that I think hampers a lot of film writing (especially social media takes), is that people often seem too concerned with how other people perceive their taste.

TV has always been mostly slop - makes sense that it gets replaced by more algorithmically personalised content. What’s interesting is that this correlates with a growing interest in cinema among young people as an artistic alternative (rather than the compromise of prestige TV)

Nathan: Do you understand why this is scary?
Elizabeth: The girl is sick?
Nathan: Sorta. The girl’s head is on backwards and she says the priest’s dead mother will perform fellatio for all eternity.

re: Ebert occasionally "missing" on a great movie, I think people forget that the point of criticizing art is not to be "correct," it's to engage with the work sincerely; a critic should be evaluated less on "correctness" and more the consistency/depth of their work

Filmmaking can never be ethical. You are stealing light and sound and putting it inside a little box. That is not nice
