The number of “public relations” professionals who do not understand the role of the media, and therefore do not relate well publicly continues to befuddle me. Not to mention there’s nothing media folks like to do more than defend their colleagues on social media.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.

lord, @ronflatter. don't you ever age?
It has been a rough morning getting news of the passing of longtime friend and former @ESPNRadio colleague Dan Davis at 84. This was the last time I saw him, when he visited @brentmusburger and me in Las Vegas in 2017. Thinking about ’Nette and his family. 🙏🏻🕯️
Attention: Just want to remind all that @natewgordon was one of the great office presences in the history of Sports Illustrated, always a winning & positive force. @richarddeitsch should've been taking notes.

As concerns the guys who beat Tyson (when he was still just a little Tyson-ish): what do Buster Douglas, Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis have in common with Alexander the Great?

I love newsletters and I'm a huge admirer of what Kendall has done at Yahoo Sports (and prior to that at Axios and as an independent creator).
This will be less column-sized — I'd define as a couple of paragraphs of opinion — but I wanted a place beyond my podcast to offer some sports media thoughts — and what Kendall and his team have built is remarkable in this media environment.
@SBJ and @cbcsports have both been awesome letting me work with their talented staffs on media/business features/news and Canadian sports in 2026 (and soon 2027). So this is another cool add for me.
If you want a great newsletter, subscribe to Yahoo Sports AM.
If you want thoughts from a mediocre sports media writer, specifically check out Yahoo Sports AM on Fridays.

BIG NEWS!
Starting Friday, @richarddeitsch will be writing a Sports Media column in Yahoo Sports AM.
It's a natural fit: Richard brings the expertise, we bring the audience (which is hard to find these days!).

Imagine if this was Sept. 1, 1939, with FDR speaking thus about the German troops pouring into Poland.

A breathtaking story in the @WSJ revealing one of the deadliest saboteurs in recent military history. The man is a Russian officer named Lt. Lev Stupnikov who delivered battle plans and troop locations to the enemy, helping Ukraine kill hundreds of his fellow countrymen, before managing to escape. wsj.com/world/russian-defect…

She was golden people.
And a superb film critic.
Ann Hornaday was a stylish and fearless film critic who taught me a lot about what the job should be. News of her death is gutting. I was honored to edit Ann in May on a piece about ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, her obsession. She was finishing a book on it. latimes.com/entertainment-ar…
