Nick @nickaquino0629 I understand that you have penis envy coming as you are as a stereotypical Upstate New Yorker. It’s particularly amusing because you built a whole thread on football 🏈 volume stats while ignoring efficiency, scoring, defense, and actual results. Let’s talk the numbers that matter. 1Rushing “advantage” is empty calories.
Syracuse: 164.4 YPG on 3.8 yards per carry.
SMU: 157.1 YPG on 4.4 YPC.
Syracuse runs more often because their offense is less efficient overall. SMU’s passing game (313 YPG, 178 passer rating, 21 TDs) means they don’t need to force the run. Volume without efficiency is how you lose games. 2Time of possession is a consolation prize.
Yes, Syracuse holds the ball ~4 minutes longer per game. They also score 31.6 PPG while allowing 26.3. SMU scores 36.4 and allows 21.1. Controlling the clock while being less efficient and worse defensively is not the flex you think it is. Explosive teams don’t need 33 minutes of possession to put points on the board. 3Total yards are close; efficiency is not.
Syracuse: 450 YPG at 5.54 yards per play.
SMU: 470 YPG at 6.84 YPP.
That 1.3 yards per play gap is massive. SMU is a top-25 SP+ team (~+13.4). Syracuse is not. One team is efficient and explosive; the other is grinding out yards against weaker competition. 4Recruiting rankings from three years ago don’t define the 2026 rosters.
The three-year average gap is tiny on paper. On the field, SMU is ranked #19, 6-1, and scoring 15 more points per game than they allow. Syracuse is 3-4 (1-4 in the ACC) after beating New Hampshire, UConn, and UNC in overtime. Current production and advanced metrics reflect the actual talent gap. 5SMU’s road record is being misrepresented.
SMU is 1-1 on the road (win at Florida State, loss at Louisville). Syracuse is 1-2 at home. Last year’s meeting: SMU won 31-18 in Dallas, leading 31-3 before garbage time. The “SMU hasn’t played a road game in six weeks” line is schedule noise, not a meaningful disadvantage against a 3-4 team. 6Turnover margin is a problem for both, but only one team is still winning.
SMU’s -3 turnover margin is real (9 committed, 6 forced). Syracuse has also turned the ball over plenty (multiple multi-INT games across a QB carousel). SMU’s scoring differential (+15 PPG) absorbs the turnovers. Syracuse’s (+5 PPG) does not. 7“Steve Angeli is back” is not the trump card you want.
Angeli has thrown 5 interceptions in limited action this season. Syracuse has started multiple quarterbacks. SMU’s Kevin Jennings has been efficient all year (high completion percentage, 19+ TDs). Getting the original starter back doesn’t erase the overall talent and efficiency gap. Bottom line:
Syracuse runs for slightly more yards, holds the ball longer, and has similar total yardage because they play slower and less efficiently. SMU scores more, allows far fewer points, ranks in the SP+ top 25, and is a 9.5–10 point favorite for a reason. The betting market, advanced metrics, scoring differential, and last year’s head-to-head all say the same thing. Cherry-picking raw volume stats while ignoring efficiency, defense, and quality of results is how you convince yourself a 3-4 team is a threat to a ranked 6-1 squad. The actual matchup still favors SMU by a clear margin. #PonyUp

One reason for a decreased student presence at Ford? Over policing of the student section. Prior to the Cal game, SMUPD had issued 4.5 student citations per game. Last year, that total was 6/game. Other similar private schools report 0.3125 per game. Tulane and TCU have 0.
