Jim Ratcliffe grew up in a council house. He created a business which has paid the salaries of thousands of staff and millions in tax. You, by contrast, come from a comfortable middle class background. Your career has been in politics and think-tanks. He has done more for this country than you are ever likely to. I understand why, as a Labour MP, you seek to demonise “the Right”. But this is reductive shite.
Say we sack JW and we are still going to be doomed for a good while, whichever manager comes in, because the squad looks so badly unbalanced. We are still a spine away from being good enough to win promotion.
We need a root-and-branch change in how the football side is run. Recruitment, coaching and contracts should be judged on results. Then we need to decide our DNA as a club: what is our football philosophy?
Structure the club to that from top to bottom. Same formation and style through the age groups up to the first team. Coaches who come in are told: this is how we play; you recruit to that. Make it clear at interview. Can you work with that? Yes, great. No? Thank you for your time.
Other clubs no bigger than us run this model successfully. Why can’t we? This aimless waste of resources needs nipping in the bud.
Run it that way and players or managers coming and going is less of a crisis, because the structure can cope when bigger clubs come calling. We should also be able to improve players and sell at a profit.
That will mean some people at the club looking hard at the last few years. I am not convinced that has happened. Too often it is soundbites. Supporters’ groups and YouTubers get invited in, made to feel warm and fuzzy, and then the hard questions still do not get asked. Where is the money going? Who is getting paid what from the new ground and the enabling development? Those questions still have not been answered, as far as I can see.
We need change and a plan that steers us off the course we are on. #LTFC
