When you plan remote meetings or online events, do you typically assume that everyone who attends is able fully participate in your conference platform? Register for the June 13th TWS webinar to make the wildlife profession more equitably accessible. tinyurl.com/Jun13WGWebinarRe…

We used a bunch of @GoPro cameras and a fancy AI program by @ben_koger to count the bats @KasankaTrust and found it to be the largest (biomass) in the world. See how we did it and how these bats help protect the park in this new short video youtu.be/Vbaia-NC0fs

Have you ever given a presentation and had the assistance of a Translator for a multi-lingual audience? Finally happened to me today, and I spoke with him afterwards to understand how presenters can work better with translators (1/n)

Accents can take a bit to adjust to before they can understand what youre saying to translate! So if you can, chat with your translator before your presentation so they are not surprised when it is go time 🏁(4/n)

Finally, translators are usually working in real time, too. Listening to your weirdo talk while simultaneously repeating/whispering it in a different language. MAJOR PROPS + RESPECT 🙏🙇‍♀️ (end)

PAPER: We ran sims with Spatial Count and Spatial Partial Identity Models to assess performance when animals are nonindependent. Increased aggregation (group sizes) cohesion (movement together). Take Home: Apply v. carefully, avoid SC for group species! bit.ly/unmarked_WB⤵️

SPIM: Abundance overestimated w/ inflated precision. But more ID covariates improved and stabilized performance. Coverage was ~95% when cohesion was low and decent probability of ID (>50%). TLDR: Acceptable with low nonindependence, enough ID covariates, and detection probability

🦌📊 I left out some nuance – that’s what the open access paper’s for 😊 bit.ly/unmarked_WB A great experience working on this with @cole_burton!

For every (tech) problem, there's probably a solution! Trying out @theTunnelBear so I can browse privately from my ISP. @rita_k_chang has been recommending it to me for years! Also, feeling kinship with the whole bear thing :) 🐻🐻 tunnelbear.com/tweet

At @ACWildbook workshop learning to leverage #AI + #Tech 4 #Conservation to ID lions, leopards, wild dogs, hyenas, cheetahs from imgs! Ax sightings, projects, collaborators! Love tech ⬇️ workload,🥽 our 👀, and supporting large scale monitoring of #African #carnivores! 💛💚💙🌍

Reading up on quantile regression, and found this nice resource with R code and visualizations. Not a math heavy explanation, but good to get started (hence the name of the page lol) data.library.virginia.edu/ge…

Today I tried #Megadetector to filter out our blank @ZCP_Zambia #CameraTrap images. Was nervous but easy setup. Works great. Game-changing time-saver! Don't let tech intimidate you🤖 Pls enjoy this non-blank sequence 🐆😻 TY @Microsoft #AI4Earth, @sarameghanbeery, @yangsiyu_

Our paper, "A cautionary tale comparing spatial count and partial identity models for estimating densities of threatened and unmarked populations" is now out! We used CT data and simulations to compare Spatial Count and Spatial Partial Identity models🦌 sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

We used sex, presence of GPS collar, and antler points. Not many ungulates have that many partial IDs. So, while unmarked estimation is🔥right now, we need to🧯and be careful. More work is needed to understand performance under diff kinds of pops, species, and sampling designs.
