Bom dia!

#Kenya 🇰🇪 CPJ urges Kenyan authorities to initiate criminal proceedings against police officers implicated in the deadly shooting of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif four years ago.
Police initially said Sharif’s killing was a case of mistaken identity. However, subsequent investigations, including by the Pakistani government, raised questions about a narrative “full of contradictions, concluding that “assassination cannot be ruled out.”
And while the courts have found the killing constituted a fundamental breach of constitutional rights, they have stopped short of directing criminal proceedings in the case, arguing this would constitute undue interference with independent prosecutorial authorities. The final domestic appeal in this case was dismissed by the Supreme Court in July 2026.
Sharif’s case is emblematic of the fear experienced by exiled journalists in Kenya as cases of transnational repression rise. Failure to deliver justice for Sharif sends a message that no journalist is safe in Kenya.

#Uganda 🇺🇬 CPJ is relieved by Friday’s release of Alternative Digitalk’s Arnold Anthony Mukose on bail and calls for an end to his harassment by Ugandan authorities. Mukose should not have been jailed for his journalism in the first place.
Mukose was detained on October 13 while seeking to recover personal belongings confiscated during a March raid on his home in the capital Kampala. Officers at Old Kampala Police Station informed Mukose that an arrest warrant had been issued against him as that earlier case — which was dismissed in August — had been reinstated, his lawyer, Kato Tumusiime, told CPJ.
In March, Mukose was snatched off the street and detained for five weeks on allegations that he published false information about the health of First Lady Janet Museveni. He was released on bail in May.
