After weeks of raising expectations among small business owners, today’s federal budget is a big let down, according to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB). cfib-fcei.ca/en/media/2026-f…

Small business owners are looking for tax reductions and tariff relief, and the budget provides neither. I find it appalling that, a year and a half into the trade war, the government hasn’t even bothered to fix the failing tariff relief measures. The budget speech says government will be at the side of Canadian businesses for as long as it takes. Sadly, this remains untrue as small firms with less than $1 million in sales do not qualify for any of the existing tariff support programs, despite Canada having collected more than $14 billion in counter-tariff revenue.

While there is a reannounced Mega Deduction and a focus on mega projects, small business owners will find the 2026 budget mega disappointing. If you are a small business owner struggling to keep your business going in the face of rapidly rising costs and a trade war, the budget will provide you with no help whatsoever.

Small businesses want a fair shot at government work, so prioritizing Alberta and Canadian businesses is a welcome step. To make it count, the bidding process needs to be simple and contracts sized so small firms can truly compete. #ABpoli #SmallBusiness
When Alberta's government spends money, it should buy from Alberta businesses first. That's why qualified Alberta businesses now get priority consideration on smaller government contracts, and qualified Albertan/Canadian businesses get priority on larger ones. We're also reviewing contracts as they come up for renewal to find more opportunities to keep that work at home. It's practical, it protects value for taxpayers and it keeps more jobs and paycheques right here in Alberta. In a time of tariffs and uncertainty, we're focused on what we can control. ✅ Good news for Alberta taxpayers and small business. CFIB applauds the Alberta government's decision to reduce education property tax rates and lock them in for three years. Lower taxes and greater certainty help entrepreneurs invest, grow, and create jobs. Now it's time for municipalities to do their part and ensure this relief isn't erased by local tax hikes. #abpoli #smallbiz Our statement here:
We're lowering and freezing provincial education property tax rates across Alberta. The new rates will standardize and freeze provincial education property tax rates for three years. These changes will help municipalities budget with confidence and give Albertans greater certainty when planning for the years ahead. Through Budget 2027, we're making changes that will: ✅ Deliver savings: an estimated $98.7 million in savings for Alberta property owners in 2027-28. ✅ Improve fairness: Apply consistent provincial education property tax rates across municipalities. ✅ Provide certainty: Give municipalities a predictable provincial tax rate to plan around when making decisions for their communities. ✅ Protect Albertans: Introduce a one-time transition tax credit in 2027 for property owners in communities where the new provincial rates would otherwise be higher.   No matter where Albertans live, they should be able to count on a fair, consistent and predictable approach to education property taxes.

Alberta's entrepreneurs are watching closely. If government is looking at ways to ease the property tax burden, small businesses can't be an afterthought. They create jobs, support local communities, and deserve meaningful relief too. @JasonNixonAB.

Calgary's small business owners were already struggling to understand how they will absorb massive water rate increases, and now they're learning that the review of the Bearspaw feeder main failure cost $2.3 million and exceeded its original budget. Businesses support investing in critical infrastructure and learning from past failures, but they also expect the same fiscal discipline from City Hall that they're forced to practice every day. At a time when every dollar matters, Calgarians deserve transparency, accountability, and confidence that public funds are being managed responsibly. As council heads into budget deliberations, this should serve as a reminder that residents and businesses cannot continue to be treated as an endless source of revenue. Council needs to rein in spending, focus on core priorities, and demonstrate the same value-for-money approach that Calgary's small business owners apply every day.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is calling on the federal government to put small businesses at the centre of its Nov. 5 budget. Topping the list of priorities for entrepreneurs is cutting the small business tax rate, along with fixing the gaps in Canada's tariff relief programs that cut out small firms. 🔗 For more information, visit: hubs.li/Q04CHp2j0

CFIB's Chief Economist cuts through one of the most persistent myths in tax policy: that lower small business tax rates discourage growth. The evidence suggests otherwise. Small business tax relief helps entrepreneurs invest, hire and expand. 👇👀
1/ Tax reform is back in the spotlight. And with rumours of a small business tax rate cut in the Nov. 5 federal budget, we're hearing a familiar argument again that I call “the mantra”: A lower small business tax rate encourages firms to stay small, so it should be scrapped. 🧵

Small businesses are not an endless source of revenue. Calgary's decision to nearly double water rates by 2030 is another blow to entrepreneurs already facing rising property taxes and operating costs. Enough is enough.

It is great to see a new federal red tape reduction strategy which includes several long-standing CFIB recommendations.  The new requirement for regulators to reduce regulatory burden costs by $2 for every $1 added is a significant step forward. This Federal budget, CFIB is asking the government to reduce the all-time-high costs of doing business in Canada as a small firm with these four recommendations. Strengthening these businesses, including CFIB members, will secure Canada’s economy in the face of uncertainty. #CFIBSince1971 #SmallBusiness #SmallBusinessSupport #CanadianSmallBusiness
