The XVI Legion did not begin as the Luna Wolves. They began as a numbered shock force drawn from Terra’s hunter-clans and slum-gangs. Their first defining action was the First Pacification of Luna: a six-hour assault that broke the Selenar gene-cults who had held Earth’s moon since Old Night. Imperial records note they were already being called the Emperor’s Wolves before the campaign ended. The Selenar’s surrender transmission— whether apocryphal or not— asked the Emperor to “call off his wolves.” The phrase stuck because it described what they actually did: rapid, directed, throat-ripping assaults that ended wars before the enemy understood they had begun. When Horus was recovered, the Emperor made the unofficial name official. Luna Wolves honored both the moon they had taken and the method that took it. It was the first time a Legion received a cognomen instead of a numeral. The captured gene-labs on Luna then became their early production line, so a portion of the Legion was quite literally remade on the world that named them. The name is therefore historical, not decorative. It records a specific victory, a specific style of war, and the moment a gene-forged instrument acquired an identity. That identity would later be discarded for “Sons of Horus.” Some of them would take the old name back at Isstvan III, as if trying to remember what they had been before they became something else.
