Sulawesi endemics: Sulawesi Scops-Owl, Sulawesi Pitta and Sulawesi Dwarf King-Fisher. “[Celebes/Sulawesi] Wonderfully rich in peculiar forms, many of which are singular or beautiful, and are in some cases absolutely unique upon the globe.”
-Wallace (The Malay Archipelago 1869)
Holding The Malay Archipelago by AR Wallace as I arrive to north Sulawesi at Manado airport. Excited to explore this island better described by Wallace as “one of the most interesting in the world to the philosophical ornithologist”.
Something magical in my career and birdwatching adventure: got to see a few species of Birds of Paradise in their habitat. These species have fascinated me for years, so this is a lifetime achievement.
Can’t believe this is finally happening. Life-long dream to visit South East Asia, and follow the steps of A.R.Wallace for a few weeks. 🏝️🦜

"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”

Great morning of birding in Rocky Mountain NP after #AOS24 with @birdmapper and @chavecito76. White-tailed Ptarmigan and Brown-capped Rosy-Finch were highlights. Instead of Lifer Pie, we went for Lifer Thai!
Galapagos cactus evolution!
Genomic analysis of the Galapagos prickly-pear cactus points to the early stages of radiation, providing an exciting chance to study the interplay of mechanisms of diversification!
