here's the argument some ai lab employees are making
- they genuinely believe what they're working on might kill everyone
- they continue to work on it because if this thing gets built it should be by responsible people like them
- the reason they do money things like selling enterprise deals and IPOing is solely to fund this effort
if this is all true then why is employee equity a thing? if you want to tell this story of being terrified of what you're building it doesn't work when there's a clear profit motive
it's particularly weird when people vest and then leave and write a tirade about how these companies are bringing the end of everything
if you want to act like this is the manhattan project, those scientists didn't have equity in something that gives them generational wealth
you don't get to say something bad is happening while profiting off it and also being seen as the good guy. one of these has to go

We put together a careful $270m 3-year plan for new regional public transport investments and last week the government decided to contribute zero dollars towards it. Instead they redirected NZTA funding away from public transport to roads. Many basic projects are now at risk. 1/

A classic case of someone who knows the cost of everything & the value of nothing - a conservation minister who thinks it may be cost effective to let #NZ endangered species become extinct. On that basis, we could lose #kakapo, #kiwi & countless other species unique to NZ.
New: Conservation Minister Tama Potaka said yesterday he wants to see costings for saving every species, suggesting it may be more cost-effective to let some species go extinct.

Anyone who says ‘the ETS will fix transport emissions, we don’t need fuel economy standards or price incentives for EVs’ is simply ignoring reality. We don’t have time for this nonsense.

If you have the time and money for a judicial review right now, a time when NZ is reopening oil and gas exploration, our natural environment is under severe threat and we have a dire housing crisis, why use it to oppose more space for inner city housing? thepost.co.nz/nz-news/350304…

The main reason we’re building @linear this way was that as we looked back our time in working in classic hypergrowth companies like Airbnb, Uber & Coinbase and realized:
1) the very best work was always created and created fast by very small teams
2) adding too many people too quickly to the company dilutes the culture and makes the company a mess and often leads to multiple re-orgs in a year.
That energy could be spent better by building in a more focused way. Instead of thinking of scaling teams, you should be curating teams. Adding, changing, removing with patience.
Some benefits of growing the headcount slowly:
- Easier to retain and grow the culture in a thoughtful way
- Easier to keep talent bar high, and focus hiring truly excellent folks
- Easier to build high quality with less people
- Easier to move faster with less people
- With less but high quality folks you need less management and processes, almost none
- Forces you to be more focused, making sure you just focus on the important things
- Less time spent in hiring, hr, people, etc drama
- Costs less, easier to extend runway or become profitable early on like we have
The downside is mostly that you have less bandwidth to work on many things at once, and some people and founders have to stretch a lot more and be more involved as you only have 0-1 layers between everyone and you.

I view everything I work on through that One Developer Framework lens. Not interested in tooling, approaches, or concepts that demand a team of thinly-sliced specialists to tick. One developer must be able to understand/use it all. From Hello World to IPO! Let's go, nerds 😀
