It’s not which neurons fire. It’s the geometry of their activity patterns. The piriform cortex doesn’t just store odor “labels.” It continually reshapes that geometry to encode odors. Representational manifolds in olfactory cortex doi.org/10.1016/j.conb.2026.… #neuroscience

The brain appears to keep ordered lists in separate, low-dimensional position-based “slots” in its activity patterns, not by replaying them one at a time. Neural subspaces encode sequential working memory without detectable neural sequences nature.com/articles/s41467-0… #neuroscience

Meta had an internal PR plan to try and discredit Jon Haidt because he was a critic of social media. Meta was going to recruit academics, like Andrew Gelman, to write take down pieces. They were trying to turn academics against one another through a "whisper strategy". This is a very serious problem for open academic debate. If academics who share negative evidence about a platform are targeted by campaigns to smear our credibility, we are in deep, deep trouble. This creates a very serious conflict of interest for anyone who is paid to do this. law360.com/articles/2542517/…

This paper answers why you can't think straight even when you're not touching your phone. Researchers from UT Austin and UC San Diego published a paper that explains every unfinished task, every reread paragraph, and every afternoon that vanished. It's called "Brain Drain." they took 520 people and gave them tests of memory and problem solving. the only difference was where their phone was. on the desk, face down. in their pocket or bag. or in another room. every phone was on silent. no buzzing. no notifications. And the results are wild. the people whose phones were in another room did significantly better than the people whose phones sat face down on the desk. the closer the phone, the worse they scored. then they ran it again and made half of them turn their phones completely off. it didn't matter. off and face down on the desk still drained the brain. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: most people said they weren't thinking about their phone at all. 75.9% said its location didn't affect their performance "at all." they were wrong. your brain spends energy just to not pick it up. a quiet, constant effort to ignore the most interesting object in the room. that effort comes from the same tank you use to think. and the more dependent people were on their phones, the bigger the hit. you are not distracted because you're weak. you are distracted because the most powerful attention machine ever built is sitting three inches from your hand. the fix is almost insultingly simple. put it in another room.

One of the most important lessons running taught me: How to work hard for a very long for something far in the distance. You don’t build a great Track season in May. You build it in the cold, dark months no one sees. Delayed gratification is one of the most transferable skills

“I am a math professor, and my field is in crisis,” @stevenstrogatz writes of the introduction of AI into mathematics. He argues that his field is as much an expression of the human spirit as music and literature: theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1…

"Findings suggest that Science of Reading-aligned reforms are associated with modest but gradually emerging improvements in reading achievement, with stronger effects observed at longer post-adoption periods."
