Excited to present this weekend at the @ASEH_org conference in Denver! Look out for our panel “Wastescapes: Managing Excess in the Twentieth-Century United States” where I’ll be talking about San Francisco’s “palace of garbage” alongside some super other scholars! @BUAmnesp #aseh

Here’s a picture of Len Stefanelli, “boss scavenger” of San Francisco in the 1960s and 1970s, as he shows off his pride and joy — the “palace of garbage” transfer station built by the scavengers in 1970.

The presentation will cover the contentious battles with locals and environmentalists that led to the construction of the transfer station, and how it transformed the city’s waste disposal regime.

Does anyone know if there's a name for the literary device where the writer refers to the real world in the present as if it was a fable/myth? i.e. "once upon a time, there were a fabled people who... made things for the singular purpose of throwing them away"

Looking to spend a couple of weeks to a month in NYC for research — anyone know of an academic house-swap service or something? I can offer the enticing prospect of spending late-winter in Boston, MA!

Saw Keerthi Potluri talk about a favourite topic of mine, Fresh Kills landfill/park on Staten Island. Looking at how the landscape memorializes garbage instead of the violent legacies of colonialism and 9/11, Potluri critiqued “green” settler modernity. #2022ASA #discardstudies

Excited to travel to the crescent city today to present at the #2022ASA, eat a mufaletta, and drink a vieux carré! I’ll be posting through the weekend about all things waste studies and @BUAmnesp.

Unironically in love with the landscape of the Olympic big air competition. Hard not to read as a Chinese critique of skiing culture.

Rewatching Bill Forsythe's Local Hero for Boxing Day. What a great film and a fantastic angle on 1980s #ColdWar culture

Also I have so much love for ripping into charmingly badly wrapped second hand books -- somehow much more exciting than the Amazon box
