CA is facing its worst deficit in 30 years and a climate crisis, but the state is still spending $billions on highway expansions. I'm in Streetsblog this morning pointing out that the CA Transportation Commission exists precisely for moments like this. cal.streetsblog.org/2024/01/…

“For all of the money that we're investing in new transit infrastructure, electrification... as long as we continue to invest in freeway expansion, we're not going to see the progress in emissions that we need to see.” - Me, in Heatmap from @emilypont heatmap.news/politics/state-…

Creating state and regional capacity for project delivery is particularly important for our ability to build large transit capital projects - which could have a huge climate benefit - more quickly and cost-effectively. Identify the key agencies that should house this capacity.

Legislators can help by supporting the creation of effective regional and state institutions that can shape transportation. More funding is certainly needed, but without the appropriate capacity and governance, funding for improvements to transportation don't go as far.

Would LOVE to see more Caltrans coverage in @politicoca from a justice, health and climate angle. Cars are California's top source of emissions-- we need to talk about it like that. #CAClimateBudget

Support a new permanent source of transit operations funding statewide to increase service levels. To meet our climate goals, CARB recommends doubling service levels - this will only be possible with new statewide funding, regions and local jurisdictions can't do it alone.

At a recent budget webinar, we asked Sec. @ToksOmishakin how the budget would help meet the @AirResources VMT reduction goals & he candidly admitted that as proposed, it would NOT. Thus, we need @CAgovernor to heed science & put forth a budget to meet them. #CAClimateBudget

Fund transit EXPANSION. Particularly in high traffic corridors. Instead of tens of billions on freeways we should spend hundreds of millions on bus & bus-only lane on freeway corridors #CAClimateBudget

Finally, establishing partnerships with local governments, NGOs, and the private sector for green projects would demonstrate a solid commitment to these critical issues.

This would signal a commitment to safer, more affordable, and sustainable transportation and further help catalyze the market for these vehicles.

Though the story of the experience of communities like Bloomington is not untold, there remains much inertia against the solutions like #AB1000 which was unable to advance recently due to opposition. #CAClimateBudget

one major untold story is the david v goliath fight of commonsense approaches to get zero-emissions trains via overhead wires championed by @calelectricrail against the fossil gas industry pushing "green" hydrogen despite its inefficiencies. #caclimatebudget

Governor Newsom should also champion policies that incentivize the adoption of more affordable and energy-efficient small electric vehicles, such as e-family bikes, e-mopeds, and light electric vehicles. E-monster trucks and super-sized E-SUVs are not the answer.

Governor Newsom could allocate more resources and funding towards sustainable transportation projects, renewable energy, and climate resilience programs to signal that climate and transportation are priorities.

Im seeing advocate across the state calling out questionable transportation projects. We need medias help in amplifying that message! Yolo -80, State route 99 and I-15 are the top projects that come to mind!
The question we're most excited to hear about - which stories are you following that need to be told? #CAClimateBudget
