Via chronosequence of fire impacted sites along HWY50 CA we investigated recovery of soil microbes 4-30y after fire. Soil microbes are important to post-fire forest as they regulate essential nutrients, form symbioses with plants.

We looked at changes in genes and metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs) in response to warming: some in top soils & none significant in deep soils (7/8)

Deeper soils had a different response: there were no apparent changes in their make up (tied to warming), they would favor respiration over growth & were not immediately responding to the changes in carbon and nutrient availability (6/8)

We sampled the whole soil profile (warming for 4.5 yrs at the time): surface-to-deep soils and made a series of process measurements in laboratory incubations with different carbon and nutrient additions to look for resource limitations in microbes (4/8)
