South Western Railway (SWR) has launched a digital life certificate campaign to simplify the annual submission process for retired employees, enabling pensioners to submit their certificates online. Historically, railway pensioners were required to visit banks in person every November to submit life certificates to ensure uninterrupted pension disbursement. The new initiative allows pensioners and family pensioners across the Bengaluru, Hubballi, and Mysuru divisions to complete the process from home. Eligible individuals can submit their life certificates using either the AadhaarFace RD (early access) application developed by UIDAI or the Jeevan Pramaan app. According to SWR, the online submission facility will remain open throughout November. Singapore is seeking to hold companies accountable under its 2014 Transboundary Haze Pollution Act as it faces its worst air pollution in a decade, driven by Indonesian wildfires linked to slash-and-burn practices in the paper and palm oil sectors. The Singaporean government has issued legal notices to 10 companies, demanding an end to burning operations. Under the 2014 legislation, entities face fines of up to S$100,000 (US$78,000) per day, capped at S$2mn per conviction. However, no company has ever been fined under the statute due to past difficulties obtaining information from Indonesian counterparts. Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam stated that Singapore will investigate entities including Asia Pulp and Paper, First Resources, Bumitama Agri, and First Borneo Plantations, adding that the Monetary Authority of Singapore will monitor lenders' risk exposure. The Singapore Exchange has separately queried seven listed firms. In response to regional criticism, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stated that foreign-operated companies bear responsibility for the fires and announced intentions to identify them. The market share of Chinese smartphone brands in India fell to 67โ€“68% in the Julyโ€“September quarter, marking an eight-year low, as record-high memory chip costs forced manufacturers to scale back budget models. According to market research firm Omdia, the share of Chinese brands dropped to 68% in the quarter, down from 71% in the prior quarter and 75% a year earlier, well below the peak of 80% recorded in Q2 2020. Counterpoint Research estimated their share at 67%, the lowest level since Q1 2019. Facing wafer-thin margins, major vendors including Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi have reduced budget offerings and pivoted toward mid-tier and premium segments to support profitability. Omdia noted that manufacturers have attempted cost optimization over the past four to five quarters through specification cuts. The reduction in entry-level portfolios has opened market share for domestic players like Lava in the sub-โ‚น20,000 tier, where Indian brands reached a 7% market share. Bengaluru's tech ecosystem is restructuring its community meetups toward deep learning, foundational research papers, and interdisciplinary AI collectives, reports The Times of India. Key developments outlined in the report: - Transition from traditional software/framework events to research-focused collectives such as the Bangalore Paper Club, SF Cognitive Science Reading Group, and independent lab Lossfunk. - Lossfunk, established by Paras Chopra, runs a paid residency program without age restrictions, funding high-risk research across machine learning, genomics, neuroscience, and anthropology that conventional venture capital or academia bypasses. - Community-led upskilling is expanding; The Product Folks, a community with over 240,000 members, runs technical sessions, hackathons, and CTO roundtables to adapt to AI disruptions across product, design, and engineering workflows. - Participants and industry architects note that while competing directly with the US and China on foundational models remains capital-intensive, India's immediate technical leverage lies in application layers and AI-assisted deployment. Europeโ€™s top luxury houses have lost roughly โ‚ฌ250 billion in market value this year, led by steep declines at LVMH and Hermรจs, as demand softens across key markets. Key figures and findings reported: โ€ข Market capitalization across Europe's six largest listed luxury groupsโ€”LVMH, Hermรจs, Kering, Richemont, Prada, and Monclerโ€”contracted by a combined โ‚ฌ251bn this year. LVMH's valuation dropped by โ‚ฌ131.6bn and Hermรจs by โ‚ฌ93.3bn. โ€ข Prolonged property downturns and stock market weakness in China have curtailed demand, with Chinese monthly retail sales growth averaging under 0.5% over the past six months. โ€ข Third-quarter sales to Chinese consumers fell by mid-teens percentages globally at LVMH's fashion and leather goods unit, and dropped between 15% and 20% across Kering. โ€ข Hermรจs ready-to-wear and accessories sales dipped 2% globally, pressured by Chinese stock declines and scrutiny of offshore wealth, though Birkin and top-end bag sales rose 10.8%. โ€ข US luxury demand also moderated, with Citi credit card data indicating spending declines of at least 4% across July, August, and September. Chinese technology giants including Alibaba, Tencent, and Huawei are investing billions into Shaoguan, Guangdong province, to develop data centre infrastructure to support Beijing's artificial intelligence ambitions, reports the Financial Times. The municipal government has outlined plans for 23 data centre complexes representing an investment of Rmb111.6bn ($17bn), equivalent to 65 percent of Shaoguan's annual economic output last year. In the first half of the year, energy consumption from data centres surged fivefold, pushing local economic growth to 5 percent, outpacing provincial and national averages. However, local residents report significant environmental and economic friction. Data centres offer few long-term local jobs, with skilled positions largely staffed from major cities and facility positions paying as little as Rmb2,000 monthly. Meanwhile, residents report heavy dust pollution and instances of land repossession without compensation, leaving displaced agricultural workers without income. According to internal workforce data released by Anthropic, the adoption of artificial intelligence agents is altering hiring and work structure inside the company. Key findings reported by the Financial Times include: - At five years old, Anthropic generates between two to four times as much revenue per employee compared to Meta and Google at the same stage. - The share of junior-level technical staff fell from 21% to 14% since early last year, while junior technical hires dropped from 27% to 9%, a shift Anthropic directly attributes to models performing junior-type work. - Employees are increasingly shifting from executing tasks to managing AI agents, prompting higher meeting volumes to manage human coordination. - Technical writers who previously drafted interface copy transitioned into agent prompting and model evaluations. - Hiring managers report shifting emphasis toward judgment and autonomy rather than baseline domain expertise, requiring applicants to demonstrate creative use of AI tools. From the WSJ: Analysts expect S&P 500 companies to report a 30% jump in third-quarter earnings from a year ago, driven largely by a handful of AI giants. Just two companies, Nvidia and Micron, account for 34% of the projected S&P 500 third-quarter profit growth. Analysts warn that concentrated earnings growth poses a risk if artificial-intelligence technology fails to deliver on the massive investments.

In several areas on the cityโ€™s outskirts, drinking water is being supplied once every 3-4 days. 3/5: In a first-of-its-kind initiative for Hyderabad, the water board will launch green tanker services from 1 Nov to promote reuse of treated wastewater for non-drinking purposes. 4/5: State govt has announced fines for misuse of drinking water. First-time offenders will face fine of Rs 1,000; overflowing overhead tanks to attract penalty too. 5/5 What has caused the water crisis in Hyderabad & how did it get so bad?
