“A stunning advance on the protein-folding problem... a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology”. Amazing work by @DeepMind with great implications for biology and medical science.
Thrilled to announce our first major breakthrough in applying AI to a grand challenge in science. #AlphaFold has been validated as a solution to the ‘protein folding problem’ & we hope it will have a big impact on disease understanding and drug discovery: deepmind.com/alphafold-blog

Holy hell, FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn's grasp of statistics is alarming. A 35% reduction in mortality does NOT mean that if 100 people get covid-19 and are treated with convalescent plasma, then 35 lives will be saved.

So, I made a little animation trying to explain how herd immunity works. When enough of the population has been vaccinated, a disease is no longer able to spread effectively, protecting even the unvaccinated. The percentage needed varies with the disease. #VaccinesSaveLives

Ludwig Investigator and Stem Cell Institute scientist Sidd Jaiswal tells a fascinating story. He began looking for mutations that lead to leukemia, and found that some mutations in hematopoietic (blood) stem cells lead some of these cells to become supercompetitive
