Hasan al-Basri was asked, “Why do you seem unconcerned with what people say about you?” He replied, “When I was born, I was born alone. When I die, I will die alone. When I am placed in my grave, I will be alone. And when I am brought before Allah to be held accountable, I will be alone. If I enter the Fire, I will enter it alone. And if I enter Paradise, I will enter it alone. So what business do I have with people?”
