Great public goods! 👍
Happy to announce the release of our first curated dataset from @GLL_Brown @Brown_Economics @Watson_School @RhodesCenter We logged every US tariff rate: threats, announcements, signed into law since January 2025. 749 of them, timed to the minute, with the exact quote and source. Only 30% are executive orders. The rest is the noise markets trade on. Free, updated weekly: globallinkages.org/datasets/…

“I’m going to show people i know economics. I’m going to talk to… Oren Cass.”
Jon noticed some anger from economists in the comments last week. He gets into that and so much more with the Chief Economist of American Compass @oren_cass on a new episode tomorrow. #theweeklyshow #jonstewart #politics

Oren Cass does not have any formal training in economics beyond the introductory undergraduate level. Cass obtained his title of "chief economist" by giving it to himself. pinpointpolicyinstitute.org/the-point/oren…

One of the best minimum wage papers to date, leveraging IRS tax data on businesses, matched to individual survey data, and a clean difference-in-difference design using 19 sizable increases in the 2010-2019 period. Sheds light on jobs, revenue, reallocation effects.

i guess this depends on how you look at things, the largest supermarket chain in the country has been de facto banned in new york and so has literally set up shop on the border
New York City has an amazing concentration of independent grocery stores, but the way that Amazon (Whole Foods) and Walmart use their power to block them out by getting unfair deals from big suppliers is making it almost impossible to survive. Tell your reps to support @MicahLasher and @CordellCleare important Consumer Grocery Pricing Act. assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?de…

Look I am sure that if you believe in the labor theory of value it must be jarring to learn that prices depend not only on costs but also consumer willingness to pay. We should come up for a word to explain this phenomenon. Maybe we can call it “demand”?
Companies no longer price according to how much it cost THEM to make something. Instead, they price based on what YOU are willing to pay. An army of pricing advisers–a cross between the Geek Squad & Seal Team Six–is helping them to execute these high-tech pricing experiments. 6/9

What if “losers” were actually compensated and people just forgot? NYC taxi medallions plunged in value after Uber we bailed them out. (Guess who sponsored original bill in assembly?) Also we bailed out teamster pensions for $36b and on the hook for closer to $83b in ARP
“just compensate the losers” is great in theory but we rarely actually do it the Luddites broke machines because their livelihoods were being destroyed Can we actually rise to the challenge this time- harness AI productivity gains while also fully compensating those displaced?

Having read the decision it seems clear that the FTC lost the monopolization case on market definition: 1. The judge did not accept that TikTok and Youtube were outside of Meta's market. 2. The judge ruled that the market that mattered was 2025 not 2015 or 2010. 1/3

One can: 1. Argue that the judge got the market definition wrong and TikTok and Youtube are not relevant competitors. 2. Argue that we should break up Meta because it used to be monopoly. 3. Disagree with FTC strategy to bring a Sec 2 case instead of a Sec 7 merger case. 2/3

Some bright points: 1. Judge was not confused about "lack of prices" and discussed both "time use" and "ad load" as measures of welfare. 2. Maybe some of the NB folks who want to make everything about market def'n and share will finally realize this is fraught. 3/3
