Today I tried to answer a bunch of questions about the East Potomac situation — where we are, how we got here, where things might go next, and what I think about it all. thefriedegg.com/articles/don…

I talked to U.S. Mid-Am winner Andrew Bailey on this week’s episode of The Loop podcast. Bailey is a former pro who took down another former pro, Nate Smith, in the 36-hole final match.
Former pros re-entering the amateur ranks has become a HOT topic of discussion on Golf Twitter over the last few months. At last year’s U.S. Mid-Am, six of the final eight competitors were former professionals. Just a month ago, Mike Sposa, who made over 170 starts on the PGA Tour, won the U.S. Senior Am. That was the same week that former tour pro Colt Knost revealed that the USGA had put his bid for amateur reinstatement on hold as it re-evaluates its reinstatement guidelines. Knost made 199 starts on the PGA Tour and made over $4.3 million in his career.
As for Bailey, who now works for men’s golf apparel company Holderness and Bourne, he never made a single start on the PGA Tour. In fact, the only reason he has a profile page on the PGA Tour’s website is because he earned “the most conditional of conditional status” at Mackenzie Tour Q School in 2015. He briefly tried the mini tour life before realizing it was making him miserable and destroying his love for the game. After a rock-climbing injury knocked him out for six months, he applied for reinstatement.
Here’s Bailey explaining the full timeline below

"The best golf happens when your expectations and your reality line up."
Ted Scott's line, by way of Ryan Gerard — who showed up to UNC as a Freshman in a Mr. Clutch shirt he hadn't fully earned yet, and knows exactly when he finally did.

Ryan Gerard's pitch to sustain golf’s boom: a lighted, low-cost kids’ course in every major city in North America.
Not a range. A course you can actually finish — after school, after work, under the lights.
The inspiration came while he was next to a pub in Gullane. 🎙️

Ryan Gerard on where the competitive fire comes from — winning seven putting contests in a row and wanting the eighth just as bad.

I like to keep it light at Fore the Ladies, but it was cathartic to share my thoughts on the state of women playing and staying in golf. Read if you'd like, subscribe if you want more :)

Everyone told us to go shorter. We're making three- to five-hour episodes on a single golf club. Weeklies stay. The long ones start this fall.

Earlier this year, Josh Hill capped an underwhelming college career by hitting a top and carding double bogey in a 4-for-2 team playoff at the NCAA Championship, ending Tennessee's season.
He didn't do much this summer, and ranked barely inside the top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Hill was a longshot to make the GB&I Walker Cup team.
But then Hill starred at the team's training camp around the South of Ireland Amateur, where he made the quarterfinals.
Still, Hill was a surprise selection by captain Dean Robertson. Even many Tennessee fans were texting coach Brennan Webb asking if that was their Josh Hill.
At No. 93 in the world, Hill was the worst-ranked player on either side.
And he'd heard all of it.
And yet, after all that, Josh Hill is forever a Walker Cup legend.

What turns someone into a golfer is not instruction or more range time. It is a person who gets you comfortable and an environment where you play first and practice second. Matt Reagan of @Op36Golf joins us this week on The Bag Drop.
