Without WW1, for example, do we ever get fascism as it actually existed (and exists)? Do reactionaries stick close to monarchies and the Church, maybe for decades? Does all the Herrenvolk mythos bullshit attract anyone but freaks? Is the far right not fully welded to capitalism?

And if Western politics stays more heterodox and local, structured by more weird insular shit that doesn't really translate along pure ideological lines, is the present Reich even possible? How the fuck are you gonna make NATO out of that?

It's not easy for a cracker to get a handle on, e.g., Peronism, because things that look incoherent are all within the electromagnetic field of a very specific core policy & its history, which you can't just cut and paste onto France. Every country in Europe might be like that

I keep putting it off for other stuff, but I've got a whole gang of WW1 shit I need to do, because it's right under everything and it's fucking unbelievable. The human brain caved in and did shit like this – they no longer knew what "winning" meant, so they just kept going
The gory details of Verdun are so impossibly horrific they sound unreal. But they’re real. The stench of the 300 day battle - death, shit, piss, rats, gas, corpse flies, rotting men and horses - was so bad, new recruits began vomiting when they got within five kilometres

Pre- and post-War modernism should really be studied as related but separate fields. I don't think Pound reaches the structural language of THE CANTOS, or Eliot writes the raw material of THE WASTE LAND for Pound to orchestrate, without that inhuman nightmare

James Joyce would've had a completely different life, so whatever he would've written, it wouldn't be what we have; Surrealism couldn't have been the same thing; Dada might not even have happened; visual abstraction probably develops slower; who knows what movies would be

That's William the Conqueror, you see. Whose conquest, among other things, catalyzed Anglo-Saxon and various Latinate languages into the earliest forms of English. Meaning. Now hold tight here. The City of London Corporation is older than the English language

This is what I meant about the LBJ Library: he killed and lied and cheated and shit and jizzed up up up, scaling sheer walls with his fingernails like a sewer rat, expecting the Throne of God. But The Top is a corridor of faceless men in offices they've had for 10,000 years

If you ask how they got there, or what they did to distinguish themselves from 109,000,000,000 other candidates, it's not that they don't know or can't remember; they just don't understand the question. Components, sure, but no logic. To them, it's like asking "Where time is it?"

Ancient Liberties. The City shall enjoy its Ancient Liberties. We're all half-stepping because it's almost physically impossible to process how old and deep It is, how immune to every weapon turned against It, how integral to everything you take for "what's outside It"

For Americans, replace "City of London Corporation" with "Wall Street," and imagine that Wall Street is literal sovereign territory with its own laws, but it's not a duchy or suzerainty or breakaway monarchy – it is, in its entirety, a corporation. And it's 1,000 years old.
Come back to this, periodically, like a mantra: no one knows when the City of London Corporation was chartered, but William the Conqueror made a public promise to leave it untouched in 1067. Magna Carta, 1215: "The City of London shall enjoy its ancient liberties."

Lords Tickleboy and Durdgewell met by chance that night; both wished to fuck the gilded skull of the Ratcliffe Highway Killer in its sconce at the Majesticum, a massive underground "pleasure grove" that runs at least from Whitehall and Belgravia Square to Battersea Power Station,
I know it, you know it, it's nothing new, but I still find it amazing how consistently you look into ANYTHING about the Gulf/Peninsula and get "In 1838, a group of British paedophile millionaires convened a meeting,"
