The most recent colleague to tell me that I should stop wearing a mask called in sick last week with 'the worst cold I've ever had'. He had to go to hospital last night with breathing difficulties.
His earlier description of symptoms sounded exactly like covid, not a cold.

Interesting post.
Three blacklisted oil tankers carrying 140,000 tons of Russian fuel are circling in the Atlantic.
The White House reached out to American traders, urging them to purchase Putin’s diesel—but not a single buyer answered the call.
Panicked by a surge in fuel prices just ahead of the midterm elections, the White House struck a deal with the Kremlin on October 9 to circumvent import bans. The administration expected Wall Street traders to jump at the chance to acquire cheap Russian diesel; instead, they treated the cargo as if it were nuclear waste.
Why? Because the legal implications of such a deal could be disastrous for them. In 2022, Congress explicitly outlawed the import of Russian oil.
A paper exemption issued by the U.S. Treasury carries no weight against a congressional ban—meaning any trader who touches Russian diesel or gasoline risks federal imprisonment and a subpoena from Congress.
The chaos at sea is Kafkaesque in its absurdity.
The tanker *Agioi Fanendes* departed St. Petersburg bound for New York, only to come to a halt in the middle of the ocean, now awaiting "further instructions"—maritime shorthand for "we are drifting aimlessly because no one wants to buy our cargo."
The rest of Putin’s "shadow fleet" is faring no better. The *Talisman* is blacklisted by both Washington and Europe, while the *Leruo* is banned across the EU, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Yet, officials in the White House—aligned with Trump’s agenda—have been working the phones, attempting to secure berths for these Russian vessels in American ports. But Wall Street’s reaction was ice-cold. Even with Moscow offering substantial discounts, grey-market oil traders have kept their heads down. Former U.S. Treasury officials have already warned that any contact with these vessels would be corporate suicide; consequently, 140,000 tons of diesel are currently adrift in the Atlantic without a single buyer in sight.
Meanwhile, Congress has taken a hard line.
Democrats—along with some Republicans—have warned potential buyers that they risk committing a federal crime, while Senator Blumenthal has sent formal warnings directly to the shipowners, demanding that they turn their vessels around immediately.
New Jersey Representative Mikie Sherrill—a former naval officer and federal prosecutor—has labeled the Trump-linked deal "corrupt and illegal." She has already prepared a series of measures to block major East Coast fuel terminals in Bayonne, Linden, Carteret, Perth Amboy, and Port Reading.
With American ports closed and the threat of congressional action looming, Washington and Moscow are scrambling to find a way out of this predicament. Energy experts suggest that, with no American buyer willing to take the risk, the rejected Russian diesel will likely have to be offloaded in South America at rock-bottom prices—resulting in a loss.
The White House’s desperate scheme—an attempt to circumvent federal law, lower diesel prices ahead of the November 3rd election, and funnel money to Moscow—appears to have failed. Much like the ships in Putin’s "ghost fleet," they are left wandering the seas and oceans, with nowhere to dock…

"it isn't the votes, it's who counts the votes"--Stalin.
yes, exactly: we are seeing the same scenario. T***p was finished, played-out, exhausted & his rallies lackluster, Harris's rallies were packed, yet on Election Day, T***p managed to "win" all seven swing states. soon then, he & E M were boasting about having rigged the election. no one in power or in mainstream media has seemed to care.
let's hope that the identical scenario isn't in store on Tuesday; but few (of us) will be surprised if it is.

The guy who compared a Trump rally to Jonestown on live Fox News was invited by the Trump campaign. They called his work phone on Monday and asked him to come.
His name is Tom Hoyle. He's 57 and runs a small custom printing shop in Charlotte called MadPark Designs with his business partner. He's hated Trump since 1989, back when he was a sophomore in college. And he really, really doesn't like getting sales calls on the shop line, from anybody.
So when the rally people called, he said yes. He even signed up with his real name and contact info, because he wanted it on the record that they invited him.
Then he had to get through the door. A private security guy asked him straight up if he was a Trump supporter. Tom told him he supports the Constitution, then started talking about his shirt, which was for an old death metal band called Death. He kept going about the history of Florida death metal until the guard gave up and let him in.
His plan going in was honestly pretty juvenile. He and a buddy he grew up with figured he'd wait a few minutes into the speech and yell something filthy.
Then a Fox News reporter, Lucas Tomlinson, found him standing off by himself and asked if he could interview him live. Tom thinks a white guy with a big beard and a ball cap was pretty much exactly what they were looking for.
He told himself he wasn't going to cuss on national TV, so he made it up on the spot. He says the first line and then just waits. The reporter goes "Wait, the Jonestown Massacre?" and that's when he finishes it.
He told The Handbasket he picked that up from Billy Crystal, who said on Letterman back in the '80s that you always let the other guy set up your punchline. Tomlinson set it up for him perfectly.
A few minutes later some men who said they were Secret Service pulled him aside. He asked if this was about the concession stand, because it closed early and he was starving. They didn't love that and walked him out. On his way out he passed the guard from the front door and told him, hey man, you didn't vet me too well.
Think about how many people had a shot at stopping this. The campaign's call list found him. The signup form had his name. A guard questioned him to his face. A Fox crew put him on live TV. Every one of them took one look at the beard and the hat and filled in the rest.
That's how almost all of this screening works. Asking somebody what they actually believe takes time, and looking at them takes a second, so everybody just looks.
The one check that actually caught him came after he'd already said it on national TV.

We tried it in 1967-1971. It was awful. Having to get up and go to school in the pitch dark while everything was still frozen solid outside. It was still dark in the evenings. The experiment was ended because it was so depressing.
