Former Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s office pushed to target all “health and medical misinformation” and wanted to “more broadly … get[] at the issue of how social media impacts people.” If asked whether censorship of Big Tech was cancel culture, his prepared answer was, “No, it’s the opposite actually,” even claiming it would ensure people had “more access” to information. A memo to Murthy’s “Misinformation Tiger Team” proposed a “maximum pressure” campaign against technology companies, while acknowledging the effort could “politicize[] [the] office by further engaging in social media/censorship war.” They also took a victory lap over Twitter’s suspension of a member of Congress.
