A 9th century poem by Rabanum Maurus. The grid is a complete poem, while the cross and body of the praying Rabanum contain stand-alone phrases.
The green text on Rabanum's body reads (in Latin): 'Christ, o pious and merciful in your judgment, keep me, Rabanus, I pray, safe'.

Spotted this unusual sign on the coffin of Nakhtefmut at @FitzMuseum_UKβs Made in Ancient Egypt exhibition. The βπβ(κ£b) in the name Abydos is given a double feather crown, a headband, and a patch of land to form βπ½β (tκ£-wr), the name of the nome in which Abydos was located.

A mural of the Baptism of Our Lord, painted by an Ethiopian hermit (αα³ααα‘) in the 16th century. He didn't want to sign his name, but he asks those who inherit his chapel to celebrate his memory! π

Made in Egypt exhibition at the @FitzMuseum_UK is very much recommended! Every object has a story to tell and it's all displayed beautifully - well lit, interactive, spacious. Wonderful showcase of Egyptian craftsmanship.
Well done @hmstrudwick and all the team!

The @scrollprize team have, two years after it was first scanned, finally found letters in Scroll 4 (P. Herc. 1667). The trick? Re-scanning it at over three times the original resolution. Running only the basic models already developed, writing appeared immediately.

A new post from me that looks at the (often overlooked) history of the names of our alphabet's letters, and which is definitely not an excuse for me to share a picture of my favourite ceramic object from antiquity.

When NYT ran the story about MingKwai, my Wife said "Someone else is going to write to you, about another artifact."
I said "No way, I think the discovery process is over."
She was right.
