This weekend marks the anniversary of βDaydream Believer,β released on October 25, 1967.
Written by John Stewart of the Kingston Trio, and produced by Chip Douglas, it became one of those records that seemed to be an instant hit. Davy sang the lead, I sang harmony, Mike played guitar, Peter played piano, and Chip was there on bass and percussion. Shorty Rogers supplied the orchestral arrangement.
The single became our third No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, holding the top spot for four weeks. It also reached No. 1 in Canada, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa, No. 2 in Australia and Norway, No. 4 in Germany and Japan, and No. 5 in the U.K.
Peter came up with that instantly recognizable piano introduction, and the B-side was βGoinβ Down.β It had actually been recorded during the sessions for PISCES, AQUARIUS, CAPRICORN & JONES LTD., but wound up appearing on THE BIRDS, THE BEES & THE MONKEES instead.
Let's hear it for "Daydream Believer!"

"[Minneapolis] was their first "big room" performance in town. They'd already played a number of shows in the area since their first record was on a local label. All of the prior Minneapolis shows were during the "two guys and a tape deck" era, and this band was embraced." - Kirk
