I went down a Robinhood rabbit hole and found something that I think deserves more attention.
Before Robinhood became the trading app we know today, Vlad Tenev and the team had actually launched a social investing network called Analyst.
This isn’t just CT lore.
Robinhood’s own archived 2013 launch blog explicitly refers to:
“Robinhood’s predecessor, called Analyst.”
And just last week, Vlad told the story himself on The Iced Coffee Hour youtube podcast. (Links below)
He explained that Analyst was built as a social network where retail investors could rate stocks, share opinions and discuss companies.
The original plan?
Get approved as a broker and layer actual trading on top of that social network.
They eventually abandoned the social side and focused on what became Robinhood.
But here’s where the story gets interesting.
13 years later, Robinhood is rolling out Robinhood Social.
I’m not claiming Robinhood Social is officially a revival of Analyst — Robinhood doesn’t say that.
But the similarity between the original Analyst thesis and what Robinhood is building today is hard to ignore.

2013: Analyst → social investing
