Today I want to talk about how dangerous the situation in Japan has become. I’ve added subtitles to this important 50-second video.
Thirty years ago, the current Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi asked the prime minister at the time why Japan should have to apologize for the mistakes of the wars it once waged.
We Japanese leftists believe that such statements are completely unacceptable.
Yet after years of education that has distorted history, combined with widespread political apathy, we have reached a point where someone like her has become prime minister. Even more alarming is the strong support she has among the public.
This is not just about Sanae Takaichi. From previous prime ministers onward, politics driven by these dangerous ideas has already been underway. Governments have poured money into military spending and promoted views that deny Japan’s past wars.
The Liberal Democratic Party, which was once a mainstream conservative party, has lost all trace of what it used to be and has turned into the far right.
Now, in an effort to wipe the left out of politics entirely, they are trying to cut the number of Diet seats, pushing constitutional revisions that would open the door to war, and even other opposition parties are going along with it.
The situation is almost hopeless. In the midst of all this, the Japanese Communist Party is one of the few leftist forces still holding its ground.
Unless people rally behind the Japanese Communist Party led by Tomoko Tamura @tamutomojcp, Japan could once again slide into militarism and a colonialist mindset.

沖縄が日本に復帰したのは1972年。
Okinawa returned to Japanese administration in 1972.
それから54年。
That was 54 years ago.
沖縄県民は、平和で安心して暮らせる日を願ってきました。
Ever since then, the people of Okinawa have hoped for a peaceful society where they can live safely and without fear.
ところが、米軍関係者による事件や事故は、繰り返されてきました。
Yet incidents and accidents involving U.S. military personnel have continued to occur.
防衛省が国会で示した数字によると、1972年度から2023年度までの沖縄県内の米軍関係の事件・事故は、なんと48,123件。
According to figures presented by the Japanese government to the National Diet, there were a staggering 48,123 incidents and accidents involving U.S. military personnel in Okinawa between fiscal year 1972 and fiscal year 2023.
さらに、沖縄県警の統計では、1972年から2025年までの米軍構成員による刑法犯の摘発は6,409件。
Furthermore, Okinawa Prefectural Police statistics show that between 1972 and 2025, there were 6,409 arrests of U.S. military personnel for criminal offenses.
そのうち、殺人、強盗、放火、不同意性交等の凶悪犯は600件。
Of those, 600 involved serious crimes, including murder, robbery, arson, and non-consensual sexual offenses.
この数字を、どう受け止めますか？
How are we supposed to take these numbers?
さて、事件が起きると、必ず登場する言葉があります。
Now, whenever an incident occurs, certain familiar phrases always appear.

そして、この事件では、米軍普天間飛行場所属の海兵隊員が強盗殺人罪で起訴されました。
In connection with this case, a U.S. Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma was indicted on charges of robbery and murder.
司法の場で事実が明らかにされることを求めます。
We must allow the judicial process to establish the facts.
一方で、私たちが問わなければならないことがあります。
But there are also questions we cannot afford to ignore.
今回、米軍は兵士に改めて行動ルールを守るよう指示しました。
