For @bbc, I wrote about Bhakki Gurung. Her earliest childhood memory is of running around the vast, wind-swept valley in the desolate borderlands of Nepal and Tibet. She remembers feeling very small, like a grain of sand, against the snowy peaks etched against cerulean blue skies

I spent weeks trekking in Sankhuwasabha, where I met Jojo Bhote. For thirty years, he'd fallen asleep to the sound of the Chhujung River. Then, one winter night, he woke to the rumble of bulldozers tearing through his community's land, guided by a signature that was not his own.

Nepal wants to be a clean-energy powerhouse. The indigenous people are paying the price. Read my latest reporting from Sankhuwasabha on how a hydro boom backed by billions of rupees in financing is colliding with local communities who say they were never really consulted. ЁЯСЗ

Such a great story telling @cupoftulsi jee, I am always worried about vulnerable situations of eastern Nepal since IтАЩm from the affected area . From my last visit to Bhojpur I realized many projects are haphazardly constructing there.

This is just pure unadulterated propaganda by the BBC. And it takes literally 2 seconds to debunk: go on Xiaohongshu (or any other Chinese social networks), type a keyword related to the mudslide (I typed "ц│ечЯ│ц╡Б", "mudslide") and you'll see thousands of posts with footage about it - including from state media (the first post in my screenshot is from People's Daily)ЁЯд╖ Even crazier - which shows the extent to which the BBC thinks its audience are complete idiots - their lead example of footage that supposedly isn't being shown in China isтАж footage that comes from China! This is how they open their article: "The dramatic footage was almost impossible to miss. A torrent of water tearing through Gyirong Port, one of the main border crossings between Nepal and Tibet, sweeping away all in its path as hundreds of people fled for their lives. The scenes, captured by CCTV cameras, quickly spread on social media and onto screens around the world. Except here, in China." We've all seen this footage, which is Chinese CCTV footage, released first in China, and extremely widely spread on Chinese social media (it's in the 3rd post on my Xiaohongshu screenshot below ЁЯСЗ). It's literally insane: they think you're stupid enough not to notice that they're using Chinese footage as their lead example to claim China isn't showing footage ЁЯдж This also all points to a deeper issue: China does have a completely different and largely insulated media ecosystem with little overlap with Western media, and extremely little reach in the West. Which means it's trivially easy for outlets like the BBC to make false claims about what's happening in China that: a) their readers will never check: it's actually difficult to for foreigners to access Chinese social networks, if only for the language barrier. b) won't be challenged by the other side: Chinese media has so little reach in the West that there's essentially no one to push back. It's like lying about someone who isn't in the room. That's the irony when you read about "Chinese propaganda": the bigger issue is that it actually doesn't really exist - at least not in a material way - and therefore falsehoods about China can be written with an impunity that they could never get away with if they were writing about, say, France or Germany. As I keep repeating, this is actually mostly bad for the West because - given the importance of China in the world today - this is a country you simply cannot afford to misunderstand. Bad journalism about China is a strategic liability. So, in a somewhat ironic way, if there were one genuine "China threat" worth worrying about, it's this: that China is not great at communicating about itself with the outside world and Western publics are left with garbage BBC articles to understand it.

here are my thoughts on Jason Arday, who just committed suicide after being incessantly hounded by the entire UK and US media class from across the ideological spectrum, The Guardian to The Telegraph and New York Times. After it was revealed that he committed plagiarism in his PhD thesis and academic work, he resigned, but it was not enough. They kept picking at him every day, over and over. They wanted to turn him into a symbol for the lack of ability of every non-white scholar. They wanted to make him the poster-boy for "woke 1", to use AOCIA's phrasing, and all its evils and depravities, so they couldn't let it go even after he had resigned and it was already over. So I want to compare and contrast Arday with another person: Bill Ackman's wife Neri Oxman, who is an Israeli Zionist Jew. She completed her PhD at MIT in 2010, and in the same year joined MIT's media lab as part of the faculty. There she was allowed to found a "research group" that was heavily funded, including by Jeffrey Epstein. Her PhD was found to be filled with plagiarism: businessinsider.com/neri-oxmтАж businessinsider.com/bill-ackтАж businessinsider.com/neri-oxmтАж As you can see there, her plagiarism was massive, and included literally copy-pasting from Wikipedia and plagiarizing from another already caught plagiarist: retractionwatch.com/2024/01/тАж. This is worse than anything Arday was accuse of by a million miles. She didn't even copy-paste from other academic sources, she copy-pasted FROM FUCKING WIKIPEDIA. This was a marginal item for a few days, her husband Bill Ackman, a fanatical genocidal Zionist, defended her plagiarism by saying that copy-pasting from Wikipedia and all the rest is actually completely normal and fine, and he pressured Business Insider's owners to review and retract the reporting (washingtonpost.com/style/medтАж), and then everyone forgot about it and she still has her PhD in good standing. If she hadn't already left her MIT position in 2021, she would still have it today, and everyone knows it because no one dares touch a Zionist Israeli Jew who can hysterically cry ANTISEMITISM ANTISEMITISM and get Jake Tapper, Dana Bash, everyone at the NYT, BBC, CNN, Guardian alongside the vast Israel lobby and regime to rise to their defense. No one attempted to make her into the symbol for Zionist Jewish supremacists and their deception and lies and how they worm themselves into elite academia and then use their Zionist Jewish supremacist husbands and the entire Israel lobby to defend them when they get caught. Jason Arday had no one. A few marginal voices attempted to call of the dogs, but they were themselves swamped with death threats and insanity. He was systematically murdered by the media and political class, while countless Neri Oxman's slither around at MIT, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Cambridge, Oxford without a worry in the world because they know exactly where power really, actually lies.

A comment: The journalism community throws around the term тАЬpress freedomтАЭ fairly loosely in Nepal. What we tend to neglect is that for press freedom to truly fulfill its purpose, we must have one crucial ingredient тАФ an informed public equipped with the judgment to make sense of the news they consume, put it to practical use in their daily lives, and also hold the media accountable for what it publishes. That element is in the universal definition of press freedom that we often ignore here in our country.

Chuffed to win the Special Category at the HKH Rangelands Photo Contest.ЁЯЩПЁЯПФя╕П
Rangelands cover about 60% of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) and are the primary source of livelihood for 25тАУ30 million people across the region. Climate change and land-use pressures are putting these ecosystems and the communities that depend on them at risk, and yet their stories remain largely untold. To mark the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026), we announced a photo competition in July 2025 on the theme: тАЬVoices of the highlands: Life, land and livestock in a changing worldтАЭ. The contest highlights the importance of pastoralism and shines a light on the richness and resilience of pastoral communities across the HKH region.
