beautiful piece. began my own JB journey earlier this year and can think of no better guide for continuing it than @simontorracinta
For his soon to be hundredth birthday, I wrote an essay trying to explain why John Berger’s appeal is so enduring, and also what he has meant to me

not even trying to be an ally here or whatever, but I think every single big McMurtry fan I know personally is a woman. the man wrote Terms of Endearment!
Not even two months since he announced he'd be taking "time away" from writing to "self-reflect and hopefully be a better person," Ross Barkan is back. Now that's efficiency.

completely mindblowing Tyondai Braxton show at Public Records last night. never heard anyone use the detail of that system to remotely the same effect he did. felt like a cousin of the recent Autechre shows, but sort of loopy and freewheeling, almost hippyish, instead of austere

for the half dozen other Acetone fans on here: RHCP's "Porcelain" sounds so much like them I feel like they must have been ripping them off on purpose. or was it just something in the late-’90s LA air? youtube.com/watch?v=j0tHXHcq…

not that I expect anyone else to be following along, but I see my last three retrospective pieces for Pitchfork—on Scritti Politti, “Owner of a Lonely Heart,” and now Art of Noise—as sort of a loose triptych about the Fairlight CMI, new pop, Trevor Horn, etc etc

for the Pitchfork Sunday Review, I wrote about Art of Noise's IN VISIBLE SILENCE, an amazing album whose reputation has still not fully recovered from the beating it took in the press 40 years ago pitchfork.com/reviews/albums…

once people realize they can instruct the computer bassist to play the root, and also sometimes the other notes in the chord, there's no telling what sorts of new musical possibilities will be unlocked
Once musicians realize they can prompt things like "140 BPM, F minor, 4-bar bass phrase. Build the rhythm around a half-time kick/snare groove. Keep F as the tonal anchor but use Ab, C, Eb and occasional chromatic approach notes for tension" more musicians will start using AI. The only reason why AI music sounds generic is because most people playing with these models don't know anything about music. It only makes those knowledgeable more capable.
