I’m really honored that IDSA (which has been instrumental in my career for so long) chose me for this role and I hope the publication is valuable to ID clinicians — civilization’s defenders and real world Ghostbusters — and helps them stay on top of an endlessly fascinating, intellectually challenging, everchanging field that has so many puzzles to solve

Heartbroken. An enormous loss for her family and friends, and for the global science and public health community.
Thank you @HelenBranswell for your extraordinary reporting, rigor, humanity and commitment to helping the world understand complex issues. 1/2

Terrible, terrible terrible news.
We're bereft to lose @HelenBranswell. She was precise, fair, and prescient, and the world is poorer without her.

Quoted in @CIDRAP on Merck pulling Recarbrio from the US. The clinical gap is immediate but narrow, hardest on difficult Pseudomonas. The real problem: stewardship limits use, revenue stays low, companies exit. PASTEUR Act would fix that.

Streptomycin and vancomycin came out of soil. Fleming needed a contaminated plate and a prepared mind. That was antibiotic discovery. De la Fuente's lab now pulls candidates out of extinct genomes in hours using AI tools. My reaction to OpenAI's video on de la Fuente's lab, and why the asymmetry argument should anchor the AI biorisk debate.

Philanthropy, however, can take drug development only so far. For a problem as significant and costly as antimicrobial resistance, the type of innovation we need will emerge only if policymakers create the conditions for it to flourish cidrap.umn.edu/antimicrobial… #AMR

Listen to these people, out on the street, singing a song about hope and still having time, in echo of the man who gave them it and whose loss yesterday would give anyone cause to question either.
If anyone knows the power of song abd music in shock and grief it’s Dubliners.

NDM, a carbapenem resistance gene, increased 461% in US hospitals from 2019–2023. What makes it especially concerning is that it spreads between different bacterial species on plasmids. I’m quoted in this @CIDRAP piece on why this matters, why some of our newest antibiotics remain vulnerable to NDM, and why wastewater surveillance could provide an important early warning system. cidrap.umn.edu/antimicrobial…

Every story this week has been a variation on a single theme: infectious disease is the default state of the world. I have said this many times, and I have written about it, because it is the fact that everything else in this field rests on. The only thing that holds these pathogens back is a system. It is a system of people, laboratories, inspectors, and vaccines, and every part of it has to be funded, staffed, and trusted.
The resistance gene that’s causing ‘nightmares’ in US hospitals 🧬
A gene that makes bacteria resistant to most antibiotics is on the rise. Public health officials want to know where else it’s lurking.

#DanielDennett on “black box science” and #AI: It's so easy to do black box science by pushing a few buttons to get an output generated by an artificial system... But are we starting to abandon our fundamental capacity to understand how things work?

Aaron Siri is misrepresenting flu vaccine evidence by selectively citing studies.
Doing this after the deadliest non-pandemic pediatric flu season on record — 280 children dead, 89% of whom were not fully vaccinated — is unconscionable.
Here’s what the data actually show. 🧵
