Apart from decoding past, present and future events, the purpose is to understand why an event is happening and what its karmic reason might be, if there is one.

The concept is very vast and also rare to understand completely in kaliyuga - i get this questions frequently in DM and during Consultations as well - after reading these two articles/threads broader perspective will be clear.
