Congratulations to all the awardees! I’m thrilled to be one of the 27 contributing to Book of Time.
Announcing our first Long Now Labs awardees in partnership with the Protocol Institute. We received 370+ exceptional submissions — and we’re thrilled to unveil the three awardees chosen to develop their concepts into prototypes. The awardees for Book of Time are:
▪️Matthew Caren and Anastasha Rachel Gunawan for “Lagu Hantu,” a handmade instrument installation that remembers everyone who has ever played it.
▪️Eirini Malliaraki (@irinimalliaraki) with “One Billion Clocks” a kinetic sculpture that tracks the metabolic time of soil
▪️Sarah Friend (@isthisanart_) for “Thermodynamic Clock for LLMs” which will test whether giving models access to different experiences of time will alter their behavior
Over the coming year, each team will develop its concept into a working prototype with $25,000 in funding and support from Long Now. Their work will appear alongside 27 selected submissions in the Book of Time anthology, coming in spring 02027.
For our second Lab, Epistemic Cycles, UC Berkeley scholar Nina Begus (@ninabegus) will serve as Lab Lead. She’ll convene an interdisciplinary working group to build an atlas of information ruptures (from writing to generative AI) and of how societies have repaired them.
Our third Lab, Interspecies Protocols, launches in 02027.
Thank you to everyone who applied, to our partners at the Protocol Institute, and to our review panel. Read the full description of these incredible projects on Ideas here: na2.hubs.ly/H08xGzF0
Gentle reminder: this Thursday, October 22nd, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., I'll be in conversation with @Lucy2Scribbles at Baxter St at The Camera Club of New York. If you haven't RSVP'd yet, please do!

Another photo illustration for the @nytopinion, "An A.I. Manifesto to End All A.I. Manifestoes" by Carlos Lozada.
A new commission for the @nytopinion just dropped: "A.I. Is a Threat, but Not in the Way You Think" @tressiemcphd. What a treat to see a nod to Eryk Salvaggio too. Big thanks to @jmwender for bringing me on board.

Pleased to be one of the 20 artists selected for the next issue of CTypeMag. They will feature a selection of images from Psychic Telephone.

“If you can’t say something to someone without being protected by a screen, then you shouldn’t be dealing with that person. It’s like Mike Tyson and me: am I going to tell Mike, you’re this, you’re that? No! He’ll kill me.”

Humbled to find out I was longlisted for the Book of Time Lab @longnow. The Long Now Foundation is supporting some of the most compelling research and creative work right now. Regardless who ends up being selected, I’m honored.
Whenever I can, I take workshops with writers I respect. There's no quicker way (besides doing the work) to refining your craft. This weekend I attended Johanna Hedva's Erotics of Thinking, and I'm still reeling. Support your fellow creatives, have your mind blown in the process.

Woke up at 5a this morning with the solution to a structural problem that's been plaguing a particular essay I'm writing. I love when answers come packaged up in dreams.
