Automated cell & organelle shape profiling can be used to richly and rapidly characterize populations of cells and study their differences. In our new @natcomms paper, we show that existing popular autoencoder-based approaches can produce quite noisy results due simply to orientation sensitivity. We introduce O2-VAE, showing that careful utilization of geometric deep learning can avoid such sensitivities and improve visual representation learning for cell biology.
