20 years ago this month, I was at Fort Knox, Ky training to be an officer in the US Army. I was a designer at PayPal and wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and serve. It was bc of my drill Sgt, (Army Ranger Sniper, Black man, and fresh from a tour) that I’m a civilian.

He challenged me to have an impact in the tech industry. I’m full of gratitude on the lessons I learned that summer. Although I didn’t join the Army, I was able to support my wife through 20 years of service as she saved lives in combat theater and at home.

Most people do not care enough about your success to give you direct/blunt and honest feedback. Its easier to be nice and avoid conflict. Balancing being direct and empathy is a skill that has to be developed. I work on getting better at this every day. That’s how trust is built.
Communicating honest feedback is very hard. I now give very blunt advice because I realized all of the most impactful advice I’ve gotten in my career has been blunt. Blunt friends/coworkers/advisors are the heroes of my life story.

One of my favorite @TheSmokingTire episodes is about the Integra Type S. I’m more excited about the Type S than any other car announced in the past 12 months. Fast, nimble, looks good, premium, isn’t too expensive, and comes with a manual. Perfect! youtu.be/56e2NPQvzV4

One way to build up confidence is by keeping promises you make to yourself. If you always let yourself down, you’ll start feeling like there’s nothing stable to depend on internally. Confidence boils down to having trust in your own abilities. That’s the antidote to insecurity.

Every designer, product manager, and engineer building products on the Internet should read this book. It provides a holistic view into how Internet products can be used for harm.

I’m hopeful that this bill leads to improvements in treating PTSD. When my wife was in Iraq in 2006, she saw the worst destruction possible to the the human body. Modern medicine saved a lot of lives, but left veterans with poor quality of life, both physically and mentally.
The bill is named after Navy SEAL Douglas “Mike” Day who died by suicide on March 27, 2023. Day received the Silver Star, the military’s third-highest award, for his actions in Iraq, where he was shot 27 times during a mission in April 2007. stripes.com/theaters/us/2023…

After a year of traveling to Portland and staying in hotels all around the area, I bought a place near Nike HQ to more comfortably split my time. Looking forward to jumping on a plane with just a backpack.

Shared the stage with the heads of shoe and apparel design at Nike/Jordan/Converse today. It’s an amazing feeling to be surrounded by design peers that you’re inspired by and learning from. That’s how magic happens.

Designers who code. A topic as old as seats at the table.
The lines between designer and frontend engineer become increasingly blurred. Why even start with a flat screen design tool like Figma, or a bespoke prototyping tool like Origami when the real thing is so easily achievable. developer.apple.com/videos/p…

I struggled as a kid when my black friends made fun of me for being half Asian. I struggled as an adult when Asians rejected that I was Asian. Being stuck between two marginalized groups in the US is hard AF.
Imma say this. Yall need to sit down and talk to more biracial (Black and White in this case) folks about their experiences and bringing. They really struggle with identity issues and acceptance. Yall scream "BLACK, BLACK" but it aint always that simple.

My wife (USAF Nurse) and her unit were deployed to Iraq with limited supplies. Like a good military spouse, I went to Costco and loaded up my truck with toilet paper, socks, snacks, and everything with caffeine. I shipped multiple giant boxes. Other spouses had similar stories.
People go viral for what they partner is doing for them especially if it’s something with monetary value but I don’t ever see folks discussing what they did for the partner. Unless it’s a man and it’s monetary, then I’ll see “king” and what not repeatedly.
