Before the first round, many of us saw that the economic and social indicators of Lula's third term were quite good, which is why we were surprised when he finished behind Flávio. I think Sunday's comeback would have been very hard without those improvements.
Here are some numbers.
8) Something that will shape what comes next: the fiscal deficit is very high (about 9.5% of GDP). It is driven entirely by interest payments (the primary deficit is close to 0%), which reflects extremely high real interest rates. High rates have been key to currency stability over the last three decades, but they have other effects too.

Electoral swing in Brazil between the first round three weeks ago and yesterday’s runoff. Absolutely impressive.
Brazil just did something it had never done before.
Flávio Bolsonaro won the first round by 1.9 points. Three weeks later, Lula won the runoff by 3.6 and will be president for a fourth time.
The first comeback in a Brazilian runoff since 1989. Thread with the data.
A detail I loved. At 5:07 pm, the first town with almost half its vote counted was Afuá, the "Venice of Marajó", a car-free town on stilts at the mouth of the Amazon where even ambulances are bicycles.
It already showed the swing toward Lula.

Three weeks ago, Lula went into the runoff from behind. On Sunday he won by 4.4 million votes.
