How many times must you show a robot a new skill before it learns it?
@Machenta_ CEO @Ed__Johns: “Once.”
Instant Robot Learning 💥🦾 xitter.cf/Ed__Johns/status/21150…
Today we’re out of stealth, and we’ve raised a $40m seed round co-led by @creandum and @usv, to bring Instant Robot Learning to life.
For the past few months, we‘ve been busy building a new company.
Machenta.
This follows results from a new kind of robot foundation model we’ve built, which I’m so excited to share with you today!
Usually, it takes hours/days of data collection and training to teach a robot.
We’ve built a model that learns tasks instantly: one demonstration, no further training.
A model trained entirely in simulation, without a single pixel of real-world data.
A model where teaching robots is so quick and easy, it feels like physical vibe coding.
A model for robots that learn like humans do, from someone like you.
Welcome to the era of Instant Robot Learning.
Thank you @Kathi_Wilhelm, @rebeccakaden, @hkanji, @jonno_evans and all of our angels for your support!

Sharing real datasets with AI tools such as ChatGPT can be risky, especially when the data contains sensitive information such as names, addresses, or other personal details.
Once sensitive data has been uploaded to an external AI tool, you may no longer have full control over how that information is processed or stored.
One possible solution is to generate synthetic data that resembles the structure and characteristics of the original dataset without directly sharing the original observations.
The FakeDataR package in R offers several useful features for generating such data:
✔️ Generate Synthetic Data: Create artificial datasets based on the structure and characteristics of existing data.
✔️ Customize Data Generation: Control how numeric values, categorical variables, and column names are generated.
✔️ Protect Sensitive Information: Apply different privacy settings and replace sensitive information with artificial values.
✔️ Prepare Data for AI Tools: Create bundles containing synthetic data and supporting information that can be used with large language models.
However, synthetic data also has important limitations:
❌ No Guaranteed Privacy: Synthetic data does not automatically provide formal guarantees against disclosing sensitive information. Generated datasets should be reviewed before sharing.
❌ Limited Statistical Fidelity: Synthetic datasets may not preserve all statistical relationships and characteristics of the original data.
I've just released a new Statistics Globe Hub module in which we explore how to use the FakeDataR package to generate synthetic data and prepare datasets for use with AI tools.
You'll learn how to generate basic synthetic datasets, customize the generation process, apply privacy settings, and create data bundles for use with ChatGPT and other AI tools.

Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) are a flexible method for modeling data that comes from multiple overlapping sources. They assume that the data is generated from a mixture of Gaussian distributions, making them well-suited for identifying clusters with different shapes, sizes, and orientations.
✔️ Works well when clusters overlap or are not clearly separated
✔️ Provides soft assignments, giving a probability for each point’s cluster membership
❌ Requires specifying the number of components ahead of time
❌ Can be sensitive to initialization and may settle on a suboptimal solution
❌ Assumes each component follows a Gaussian distribution, which may not reflect real-world data
Beyond clustering, GMMs are used for density estimation, anomaly detection, image segmentation, and modeling continuous data in tasks like speech recognition. They’re effective when a probabilistic view of the data structure is needed. In high-dimensional spaces or when data distributions deviate strongly from Gaussian, methods like Variational Inference, Dirichlet Process Mixtures, or kernel-based density estimators may offer better results.
The image shows how GMMs can model a complex distribution using multiple overlapping Gaussians. Each peak in the histogram corresponds to a component learned by the model, illustrating how the mixture adapts to fit the data. Credit for the visualization: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixtur…
🔹 In R, the mclust package supports GMMs with built-in tools for model fitting, selection using BIC, and visualization.
🔹 In Python, use GaussianMixture from scikit-learn, customize covariance structure, and compare models with BIC or AIC.
