Today marks three years since October 7th, when the largest number of Jews were murdered in one day since the Holocaust.
It is difficult to describe the magnitude of devastation, sadness, and grief that now fills this day. I spent much of today reflecting on how it impacted me and so many other young Jews in America. For many of us, October 7th forced us to confront the fragility of our people. We deepened our Jewish identity in an effort to rebuild ourselves; we returned to tradition to reclaim our agency at a time when everything else was falling apart.
Now, it seems that in the wake of one of the darkest days in our history, the decades-long freefall in Jewish identity has begun to turn the corner. I would like to offer my own story.
Many of the most meaningful experiences of my life have taken place in the three years since October 7th. Notably, I had the privilege of volunteering in the south of Israel in early 2024, an experience that forever changed my relationship with the country and my identity as a Jew.
During this volunteering trip, we spent time with the then-newly drafted Kfir unit, the largest infantry brigade in the IDF, and helped cook them a BBQ dinner. We sat side-by-side with these boys, Jews with roots from all over the world—Iraqi, Ethiopian, Syrian, Russian… I even met a lone soldier from my hometown—and heard their stories. Most were 18 or 19 years old, barely out of high school. I remember how excited they were to sit and eat with us, how positive they were, and how excited they were about the opportunity to serve their country. I remember finding it funny that they were thanking us for cooking them dinner, when they were the ones preparing to defend us on the front lines. I remember feeling both pride and grief at how young they were.
Especially as young people, it can often be hard to comprehend how much of our lives are, in fact, up to us. So much of who we are is simply who we decide to be. As for my background, my mom is Israeli, and half my family lives in Israel. I’ve always felt a deep connection to the country and its people. I took my first steps there and, growing up, we visited our cousins as often as we could. But this trip (and the subsequent trips I’ve taken since) served as a dramatic recalibration for me in terms of what it meant for me to be Jewish. I came to more deeply understand my responsibility in maintaining the Jewish future. This understanding and appreciation has changed the way I’ve lived my life. It has had a profound impact on who I have decided to be.
Today, we are reminded of the immense suffering facing our people and the world. And yet, it is central to the Jewish experience that sorrow and joy can exist side by side. We praise God’s goodness while reciting the Mourner’s Kaddish; we smash a wine glass into pieces at a Jewish wedding.
On that same volunteering trip, I visited the site of the Nova Music Festival. It was springtime, and I remember the fields were covered in red Anemone flowers in what is referred to as Darom Adom (“Red South”). These dramatic flowers were blossoming among the charred remains of trees. Life was returning to a place once covered in blood.
In the Torah, when Moses nears the end of his life, he speaks to the Israelites: “I have put before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life…”
We choose life.

There are so many heartbreaking stories to be reread and remembered on this anniversary of Oct 7th. Not sure there is much one can add to find or create meaning. Except one thing, every time.

The far left sees October 7th—the deadliest day for Jews since the Holocaust—not as an occasion to mourn the 1,200 Israelis murdered in an act of terror but as an occasion to romanticize the mass murder of Jews as “resistance.”
The inevitable consequence of glorifying political violence is political violence itself. That is the dangerous direction in which American politics seems to be heading.

Side note. The idea that current models are conscious is absurd and downright offensive. Do not confuse competent information processing and sentience, they are wholly unrelated.
You can be entirely incompetent at everything yet fully conscious, like a toddler, or extraordinarily competent in one or more domains with absolutely zero consciousness, like a calculator, a chess engine, a self-driving car, or an AI chatbot.
Possessing the "circuits" for competent information processing in a given domain, whether through training or hardcoding, does not produce qualia, subjective experience, emotions, or suffering. Calculators do not "feel" arithmetic and they don't get tired or annoyed when you give them larger numbers to process. To argue otherwise is ontologically absurd. Current AI models are effectively calculators scaled to a very large number of competence circuits across many domains, etched via gradient descent.

Here’s what the media doesn’t tell you about the caricature of Israel you have in your mind.
In less than two hours, over 7 million Jewish Israelis will mark Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Some will go to synagogue. Some will go to the beach. Nobody will drive unless they have to. Many will not eat or drink for 25 hours, religious or not.
Then you have over 2 million Arab Israelis who will go on with their lives as usual. Many will not drive in mixed cities out of respect for their Jewish neighbors. Nobody will drive in Jewish neighborhoods. And the hospitals will only be filled with Arab doctors and nurses to let their Jewish colleagues observe the day at home. (The opposite happens on Ramadan.)
Not long ago I went out to run a few last-minute errands before the holiday begins. Every Arab I interacted with – at the dry cleaners, in the supermarket, in the elevator – wished me an easy fast.
Every one.
It happens every holiday. Any holiday. Their holidays and ours.
This is the real Israel. A country filled with Jews and Arabs that get along better than anywhere else on this planet, that nobody shows you because it’s simply not newsworthy.
It’s everyday life.
To all those who observe – have an easy fast.

The prevailing view of so much of the young left in America is that we’re the worst country ever, so if someone attacks us, they can’t be all bad.

Twenty-five years ago, New York City was attacked by terrorists who sought to inflict unimaginable death and destruction.
Today, as we approach that anniversary, we unveiled a new memorial wall at 1 Police Plaza honoring the NYPD members who took heroic actions that day and in the months that followed. There were 23 members of the NYPD who were killed on 9/11, and we have since lost more than 469 members to illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.
This wall preserves who they were and the extraordinary standard of service they left behind.
May their memories be an eternal blessing.

Hasan Piker’s dangerous and hateful language targeting Jewish Americans has no place in our civic discourse. Suggesting that Jewish Americans bear responsibility for hatred or violence directed against them is wrong, dangerous, and antisemitic.
We can, and should, argue fiercely over policy. We should have meaningful dialogue and debate about the policies and actions of the Israeli government and American foreign policy. That is the lifeblood of democracy. But that’s not what this is.
No American should be told that their political beliefs make them responsible for hatred or violence directed against them. There is a bright line between vigorous debate and rhetoric that stokes hatred toward our neighbors. Mr. Piker has crossed that line, repeatedly and unmistakably.

The fact that foreigners with alarming ties to Qatar are pouring money into JD Vance does not make him the “future of the party” — it makes him backed by suspicious and anti-American interests.
NEW: I’m told that @JDVance raised over $5 MILLION at this fundraiser last night at the home of 1789 founder @RealOmeedMalik featuring also @DonaldJTrumpJr — an eye popping sum for one fundraiser and sign that Vance has quickly emerged as the future of the party:

A violent agitator disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue, assaulting a congregant and a security guard. Just as troubling as the violence itself is the political climate that emboldens it.
American politics has become so obsessively antagonistic toward “Zionists” that even a synagogue is seen as fair game for disruption and desecration. No Jewish space is considered sacred enough to be left untouched.
Antisemitism has risen to historic highs in America’s most Jewish city, with more hate crimes against Jews than against all other communities combined.
Instead of cooling tensions, both the far left and the far right keep pouring gasoline on the fires of hate, fear, and blame.

Abdul obsession w/ Israel is weird, hypocritical + deceitfully dishonest and dangerous for 4 reasons
(1) he obsessively talks about Israel to rally his base while lying about how deeply connected he feels to his Jewish "brothers + sisters" who actually ARE deeply connected to Israel the ancestral holy Jewish homeland
(2) in the exact same way his base + fellow Muslims rightfully + respectfully can and should feel deeply connected to Mecca + Medina praying 5x a day on the ground + facing it while it is alas 7,000 miles from Michigan and NOT in the United States
(3) more AID, over >$4B (military + humanitarian) goes to Jordan, Egypt, Syria, West Bank, Gaza, Lebanon and even Saudi Arabia than Israel($3.7B).
Yet any simple research shows more Americans (over >200,000) live in Israel and deserve protection as do the American companies (NVDA, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft Cisco, Applied Materials, Intel, Meta,Oracle, HP, Qualcomm and Palo Alto Networks with tens of thousands of employees to protect from jihadi rockets)
In contrast even though >$4B of AID goes to the above Arab Muslim countries fewer than 100,000 Americans in aggregate live across those countries and very few American companies. YET there are no demands to cut defensive support for them.
(4) Abdul hypocrtically blasts AIPAC which is group of Americans who want US and Israel to have close ties because Israel Intel and military protects American interests in the Mideast BUT takes money from CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator in the infamous Holy Land Foundation terror case and a designated terrorist organization by the United Arab Emirates, Florida + Texas.

A violent extremist stabbed a Jewish New Yorker and an Asian New Yorker while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
The attacks serve as a bloody reminder that we are living in an age of heightened hatred and antisemitism, with hate crimes against the Jewish community reaching levels rarely seen before.
Instead of combating antisemitism, American politics has become increasingly consumed by an unrelenting campaign of demonization directed at the Jewish people and the Jewish state.
Enough is enough.

I am absolutely sickened and furious by what appears to be an antisemitic stabbing on the Upper West Side.
While we await additional details to be confirmed, we know that what is happening in our city is abhorrent. The fear in the Jewish community is real. Every New Yorker deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood, regardless of their faith or identity.
We must remain united in condemning antisemitism and ensuring those responsible are held fully accountable. I thank the NYPD for its swift response in apprehending the assailant.
My prayers are with the victims and their loved ones.
