My first @THR cover: Ryan Coogler. Spent an afternoon in Oakland with the man who just made Oscars history, and might be the most important director in Hollywood right now. He went deep and did not hold back:

'Possible Love' actor Jeon Do-yeon could be the first person from South Korea to be Oscar-nominated for best actress.
Director Lee Chang-dong says, “It is still very rare and difficult for an actor in a non-English-language film to be nominated for an Oscar, [and] I believe her performance, which brings such complex, layered emotions to life, can capture audiences’ hearts across language barriers. Proper recognition from the Academy…would be both a recognition of one actress’s achievement and tangible evidence of the change the Academy is striving for.”

Jeon Do-yeon Defined an Era of Korean Cinema. With ‘Possible Love,’ She’s Become an Oscar Contender hollywoodreporter.com/movies…
Jeon Do-yeon in POSSIBLE LOVE: A trailblazer in Korean film soars to new heights. She's contending for her 1st Oscar nom, which would make history. “I..find myself wondering why it has taken the rest of the world so long to notice her,” Lee Byung-hun says: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

Travis Knight says that Amazon didn’t have enough faith in ‘MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE’ because “its life on streaming was much more important to [them] than in theaters.”
“It’s not something I understood going into it. I wanted their faith in us as filmmakers and in the movie to be rewarded in a way that wasn’t to my hopes and expectations. The film deserved a better fate than it got, but I’ve made peace with it.”

Went very long with WILDWOOD'S Travis Knight, indie studio chief & big-budget filmmaker. He's taking a grand anti-AI, pro-theatrical stance at a turning point for his company and his industry. "There’s a place in this world for handmade art," he says: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

Luca Guadagnino is in blazing form with the bitingly funny, deeply unsettling ARTIFICIAL, led by superb performances from Andrew Garfield and Yura Borisov as two of the key people who led us to the current AI crisis point. My @THR review from #NYFF2026.

“Is Alex Gibney going to get that question? Is Nathan Fielder?” Ava DuVernay returns this Friday at #NYFF with 14TH, and in her first intv ahead of premiere, proves as fiery, thoughtful & candid as ever. That goes for her brutally persuasive new movie too: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…
In Guadagnino's bleakly compelling ARTIFICIAL, Andrew Garfield takes some massive & tricky swings in his portrayal of Sam Altman. What he pulls off is mesmerizing, strange and terrifyingly seductive, especially as he finally becomes the film's center. A career-best performance.

Andrew Garfield viewed 'Artificial' as the closing of a chapter, going back to his turn in 'The Social Network' as Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin:
“I was auditioning for Mark [Zuckerberg], and I was kind of told that the part was as good as mine,” Garfield says. Then Jesse Eisenberg auditioned and proved undeniable for director David Fincher. “So this kind of scratched that itch for me. There was a dangling remaining itch that I wanted to dive into, really walk into and explore and leave no stone unturned.”

“Zero AI” was used in the making of 'Artificial,' director Luca Guadagnino says. That goes for all of his movies, in fact.
“I’m an old-fashioned guy. I’m analogic. I shoot on 35. I believe in good old performance,” he says. “Jean Renoir used to say: ‘You have to leave the door open to reality on a movie set.’ And how do you do that if you are sending prompts to a computer?”

ARTIFICIAL premieres tonight at NYFF. I got deep into the making of the film—and why it scared Hollywood: “Hopefully what we’ve done is that we’ve pushed the envelope as far as possible without the risk of being taken to court,” Andrew Garfield told me: hollywoodreporter.com/movies…
“Sandra said I should not threaten people, but I have watched her career for the last 20 years and I’ve seen so many prizes taken away from her. If she’s not going to be nominated for this one, I’m going berserk.”

LA BOLA NEGRA is the first Netflix film to have won the #TIFF People's Choice Award, and the first non-English-language film to have won the award in 15 years. This is Netflix's strongest best-picture candidate to date, and the clear primary challenger to The Odyssey. Off we go!
