An integrative review chapter addressing whether ‘super-recognisers’ possess qualitatively different face processing expertise compared to the rest of us. Current evidence suggests not.

Are familiar and unfamiliar faces recognised using qualitatively different processes? We tested this using natural variation in TV viewing behaviour — individual differences evidence points to shared processing.

GODFATHER OF AI ADMITS HE WAS WRONG ABOUT RADIOLOGISTS
geoffrey hinton predicted in 2016 that within about 5 years radiologists wouldnt be reading scans anymore
10 years later he gives two reasons he got it wrong
first, making scans cheaper and faster didnt mean hospitals suddenly needed fewer radiologists. it meant they could just do more scans
and second, he admits he didnt really understand the job itself
his picture of a radiologist came mostly from one former student who spent his time reading scans and barely talking to people
the AI part actually went pretty close to plan. machines got really good at reading scans
but making one part of a job cheaper doesnt automatically make the whole job disappear
AI can shrink a task without shrinking the job
How does metacognitive skill shape perceptual comparison performance? A new paper led by our postdoc Zoë Little finds people can identify which face matching decisions they might get wrong—and improve their accuracy by spending more time on these cases.

Using AI helps people achieve higher grades and get their work done much faster, but they learn less and suffer on actual exams.
I have seen this in my own large Intro Psych class:
-the class average for open book exams is almost always 85%
-after AI, the average shot up to 95% (because it was easy to use AI)
-after I made the final cumulative exam in person (without AI) it went down to 68%
It perfectly mirrors the results of this new research and poses a serious problem for education and work performance. We are going to see inflated performance even as people learn less:

Unfamiliar face matching is difficult. The average person has an error rate ~20%. And it's hard to improve. In our new study, we find an 8% improvement in face matching performance via the "wisdom of the crowd within" effect. Paper: journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs…
But bike-riding humans are even worse at drawing bikes than ChatGPT! As Richard Gregory observed in his studies of bike drawing …
As an avid cyclist, I was amused to see ChatGPT's “powerful new image engine" draw a bicycle with the "brake" label pointing to empty space where brakes are sometimes found on other bicycles. The point of these AI fails (regularly collected by @garymarcus) is not that LLMs are useless or unintelligent but that they think differently from humans, lacking explicit knowledge of reality and instead amalgamating billions of statistical generalizations. open.substack.com/pub/garyma…

Interesting to see people make LLMs of you because you know what you would say and you can see the LLM is wrong. This is harder to judge when you make LLMs of other people bc you have nothing to judge the accuracy against.
I will tell you my view of 90/10 cotton-synthetics 🧵

What makes some people exceptionally good at recognising faces?
New study by @dunnhappy et al @RSocPublishing shows the answer might lie in the light they capture on their retina 👁️
