Gentle Reminder: the claim by @mzjacobson in the @youthvgov trial is a load of absolute bunk. It is predicated on a series of faulty/ridiculous assumptions about Canadian coastlines, solar and tidal power assumptions and ignores the challenges of Canada's geography #canpoli

"The Canadian energy superpower theme, while certainly not new, is finally happening. Driven by global conflict, trade disputes, our continuing GDP decline, an affordability crisis, sovereignty challenges and energy security concerns, Canadians across the country increasingly support accelerated development of our energy resources." "Canada is a leader in the full spectrum of energy — oil and gas, nuclear, hydro, renewables — but it is growing our oil and gas production that offers the largest and nearest-term economic benefit to the entire country." financialpost.com/opinion/co…

But can we agree that promoting LNG and mineral exports out of a mostly ice-covered port in Churchill using icebreaking, is a lot riskier than sending double hulled oil tankers out of Prince Rupert, which can already accommodate shipping containers that carry 50,000 barrels/8000 m3 of petroleum fuel in their own tanks? Can we agree there are different standards being applied for political, rather than scientific or technical, reasons?

The guidelines for the "greenwashing" regulation - one of Danielle Smith's 9 Bad Laws - have been updated. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The high-handed greenwashing bill turned environmental transparency into a legal liability rather than a competitive advantage, and many companies in Canada simply stopped reporting their environmental performance and targets as a result. While these are a big improvement from the original 2024 regulations, there's still lots of compliance uncertainty. I don't think these changes will get companies to start reporting on environmental performance again. competition-bureau.canada.ca…

I sat down with @marcelcrok @ClintelOrg for a wide-ranging discussion and debate over climate science and policy. I enjoyed our conversation. Now available . . .
Scrap the Paris temperature targets, says @RogerPielkeJr. They don’t tell us which policies work. Yet households and businesses pay the price of those policies. And their patience has limits. Ever-higher energy bills. Industry moving abroad. European leaders should not be surprised when the yellow vests return. Pielke also sees expensive energy as a driver of the political upheaval across many countries. His “iron law”: when climate policy collides with the economy, the economy wins. A temperature target or a deadline for “net zero” won’t change that. His alternative: technological progress that cuts emissions AND increases prosperity. In conversation with @marcelcrok, Pielke explains why climate policy needs a rethink — and why he is finally optimistic. Watch the full interview: youtu.be/QFrAGK_OEXk

Canadian heavy crude is fetching near-record premiums across the Pacific, bolstering the case for the country’s plan to build a new pipeline to its west coast. A barrel of Canadian Cold Lake crude delivered to South Korea traded at a record $9.50 a barrel more than the Dubai crude benchmark in September. It’s a stark contrast to the weakening price Canadian oil is getting in the US, its biggest market. Oil sands benchmark Western Canadian Select’s discount, called a differential, to a monthly average of West Texas Intermediate futures widened to as much as $28.25 a barrel in Alberta last week, the biggest in almost four years. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Clear understanding of climate pragmatism via @Schwarzenegger “It’s like when you do bodybuilding, you know, if you want to win the Mr Universe title and you want to have 20-inch biceps, at one point you have to say, OK, next year I have to have 14 inches. Across the rich world, nearly a quarter of all development aid now goes to climate projects. The core problem is opportunity cost. Every dollar subsidizing solar panels or carbon accounting is a dollar not spent on schools, maternal health or clean water. financialpost.com/opinion/op…
