I just finished my 25th season photographing thunderstorms in D.C., and I have two photos of lightning striking the Washington Monument.
I’m not sure if that makes me lucky or unlucky. I feel like I should have at least one or two more photos, given how many years and photo shoots I've done. But there’s always next year. @capitalweather

I was in Centreville, Virginia this afternoon and photographed a growing rain shower in the eastern sky. To the east, at my house near Oakton, it rained an 1/8 of inch in ten minutes before the shower moved quickly to the southeast. @capitalweather

I reviewed my lightning photos from August 27 and found another photo with anvil crawlers centered over the Marine Corps War memorial. Here are both photos with timestamps. @capitalweather
These are photos taken during a severe thunderstorm ten years ago that produced an amazing amount of lightning, like the storm last Thursday. The difference was that the storm ten years ago moved slowly, giving me an hour to take dozens of lightning photos.
I didn’t photograph the storm Thursday because it was late, but mostly I didn’t expect it to explode over D.C. @capitalweather
