Rosen’s new article on Canal Street counterfeits absolutely rules! It’s a fun read, packed with mind-blowing statistics and colorful commentary.
NEW: The counterfeit bazaar overwhelming Canal Street has flourished despite repeated NYPD crackdowns. In 2025, more than 92% of the 908 counterfeit arrests made in that area were booked as felonies. All but two were arraigned as misdemeanors. How lax prosecution, inconsistent policing, CCRB complaints against cops, and a felony threshold that seemingly no one can prove has only empowered counterfeit vendors. city-journal.org/article/can…

NYC’s Canal Street operates in plain sight. The vendors sell fake Louis Vuitton bags, Rolex watches, Gucci wallets, and Prada sunglasses across blankets and folding tables. How are these people able to brazenly operate an open-air counterfeit market? Police do arrest them. But thanks to civilian complaints against cops, a felony threshold nobody can prove, and lax prosecutions, the market hasn’t missed a day of business. @dedwardro’s latest: city-journal.org/article/can…

A whopping 14 panels of witnesses are set to testify at the City Council’s AI hearing today. Here’s a look at who that includes, starting off with the security experts/whistleblowers. Hearing’s just about to kick off now.

NEW: Mayor Zohran Mamdani will be honored next Monday alongside the National Iranian American Council, an organization long suspected of being the unofficial lobbying arm of the Iranian government. The honor comes just three months after the revelation of a planned meeting between a City Hall official and Iran’s ambassador to the UN, raising uncomfortable questions about the mayor’s broader social and professional circles, @adamlehodey and I report. city-journal.org/article/mam…

New: In a setback for Mayor Mamdani, justice in the OG lawsuit against the pied-à-terre tax has ruled the notices for the taxes were "arbitrarily and capricious" and are to be cancelled. The judge also orders the massive supplemental property tax roll online must be taken down.

NEW from me and @Rafa_Mangual @ManhattanInst: Everything you wanted to know about ALPRs (aka "Flock Cameras") but were too afraid to ask. We break down: * What ALPRs are (cameras that take pictures of license plates); * The evidence that they reduce crime (developing, but pointing in the right direction); * How they relate to the Fourth Amendment (they don't contravene it) And we explain (including model legislation), how states can and should regulate them: * mandatory logging of access; * require supervisory approval for access in many cases; * impose a 30-day limit on retaining images; * require quarterly audits, and make auditing materials available to government oversight authorities and the public; * impose criminal penalties for the abuse of ALPRs; * limit their use to the investigation of major crimes; * require affirmative permission before placing them near healthcare facilities, places of worship, and polling places. ALPRs are a useful police technology. There are risks, but we can mitigate them with smart regulation. This is how to do that. Read the full report: manhattan.institute/article/…

Under-enrolled microschools spend much more per pupil than schools with healthy enrollments. School consolidation would do a lot of good. It’s worth noting, however, that while demographic change is a major factor (smaller families, etc.), many of these schools are under-enrolled because they are not offering high-quality instruction. See @dany_egorov: manhattan.institute/article/…
Everyone who uses the per-pupil spending figure in NYC does not understand the difference between mean, median and mode. Or you do but conveniently pretend every school gets the same amount of funding and it’s just not true. So many hypocrites up and down this TL.
