ALT Photo of 3 Art Deco building models pictured left to right of Lyceum Cafe (shopfront now replaced); Lyceum Cinema (currently vacant and on the Buildings At Risk Register) both in Govan, and Queen's Cafe on Victoria Road in Govanhill (now extensively altered apart from the stained glass windows) created by S3 pupils (aged 13-14) from Lourdes Secondary School in Cardonald, south Glasgow, using mostly recycled materials, highlighting the importance of maintaining and re-using these buildings as inspirational icons for both local communities, and the future of the city and our shared environment. There were over 35 building models created by 6 south Glasgow schools displayed in our exhibition today - photos of all the models will be showcased in an Online Gallery in 2025 - which is also the Centenary of Art Deco!

ALT Photo of a model made by pupils from Blackfriars Primary School in the Gorbals, from recycled materials, of the 1933 frontage of The Queen's Cafe on Victoria Road, Govanhill, south Glasgow which has been extensively remodelled twice since the 1930s. The photo was taken at our Art Deco Southside Alive Schools Model Building Challenge community exhibition on Saturday 2nd November 2024.

ALT Photo of a model made by Shawlands Primary School pupils of the lost Art Deco gateway entrance to the fomer Shawfield Stadium on the borders of Glasgow and South Lanarkshire council districts. The site was used for regular football matches - as the home of Clyde Football Club and also for some important early matches in the history of women's football in Scotland - and occasional big music concerts, as well as for greyhound racing. The remaining Art Deco gateway is not a listed structure and the site is currently vacant and falling into dereliction. Given its position as an important landmark in the area that speaks to many different parts of our past, good and bad, we believe it is a strong candidate for being given listed building status, along with the small Art Deco-influenced building remaining inside the Shawfield site. It certainly captured local school children's imagination. The area will lose part of its unique identity and sense of history without it.

ALT Photo of a model of Kinning Park Co-Operative Drapery Store's Art Deco extension on Bridge St in south Glasgow, at our Art Deco Southside Alive Schools Model Building Challenge exhibition on Saturday 2nd November 2024. A flickering light inside the model illuminates the noctural goings on inside the building as imagined by two pupils of Holyrood Secondary S3 art and design class: Matylda Kaminska and Laura loranc-Paczkowska.

ALT Photograph of a model of the Luma Light Bulb Factory in Shieldhall, south Glasgow, built 1938 and designed by Cornelius Armour of the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society's in-house architects department, in association with the Swedish Wholesale Cooperative Society. Armour also designed the very different Art Deco style Kinning Park Co-op Drapery Store Extension on Bridge St, while he was an SCWS architect. This model was created by a team of pupils from the S1 art & design class (aged 11-12) at St Paul's High School in south Glasgow for our Art Deco Southside Alive! Schools Model Building Challenge collaborative outreach project and community exhibition held on 2nd November 2024.

ALT Photo of a 6-part assemblage model exhibited at our Art Deco Southside Alive! Schools Model Building Challenge exhibition & community celebration day in Glasgow on Saturday 2nd November 2024. It features patterns and textures abstracted from the Art Deco Leyland Motor Co Ltd building in Salkeld St in Tradeston / Port Glasgow district of the city's south side. The pupils first experimented with creating and printing the patterns on card, paper, wood and florists tissue, and finally they printed them onto clay bricks using gel printing plate and inks which were then set into wooden boxes made to hold dominoes game pieces, and they also printed on the sliding wooden dominoes boxes' lids! The collaborative model was created by David MacKinlay, Desmond Djangmah and Caleb Robertson, pupils at Hollybrook Academy school in south Glasgow.

ALT Book your place for our 2-hour community exhibition & celebration of the models created by P6-S3 pupils from 8 schools across south Glasgow, where pupils will also receive feedback from our special Community Panel of artists, architects, designers & more... this is a one-off event and we can't wait to see the models the pupils have crafted of local Art Deco buildings! The poster shows illustrations of Leyland Motor Co showroom, Govan Lyceum, Luma Light Bulb Factory and Queen's Cafe... all southside Art Deco era icons that are among some of the buildings the students have selected from to fashion themselves, with an encouragement to use recycled materials to emphasise the importance of sustainability to the future of these buildings and the wider character and stories of Southside neighbourhoods. The Saturday 2nd Nov event from 12.25-2.20pm is free but booking required - book your place on Eventbrite. On the cusp of Art Deco's Centenary in 2025, celebrate next generation creativity!
